A total of 22 Aggies showcased a wide variety of works, ranging from paintings and drawings to photography, poetry, industrial arts and sculpture. Friday's opening night also featured a "Meet The Artists" reception, in which visitors could discuss the exhibits first-hand with their creators.
The Art of Athletes was first conceived in the fall of 2009 by football players Brandon Tucker and Bakari Grant, at the recommendation of art professor Mike Henderson. Tucker moved the show from the downtown Log Cabin Gallery to the on-campus Basement Gallery for the second installment in January of 2011.
Distance runner Kristina Taylor (2012), field hockey player Amanda Marinac (2013) and swimmer Devon Demont (2014) subsequently served as coordinator. Tucker, who had one of his pieces showcased at the NCAA headquarters, later went on to pursue an MFA at Laguna College of Art and Design. Taylor has continued her art and design work as a professional in Southern California. Marinac showcased her artwork in downtown Davis during the summer after her graduation. DeMont, who graduated in 2014 with a degree in studio art, also interned at Davis' Pence Gallery.
