DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis athletics will host a tribute to Jim Sochor, the beloved former football coach, golf coach and athletics director, at Aggie Stadium on Saturday. The event begins at 10 a.m. and admission is free.
An enshrinee of both the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame, Sochor established the philosophy later known as "Aggie Pride" during his 19 years at the UC Davis football helm. He passed away in late November after a long illness.
Popular Davis Enterprise columnist Bob Dunning, who covered Sochor's career as a sports beat writer, will serve as master of ceremonies. The guest speaker list comprises former Sochor players Paul Hackett, Bob Biggs, Rolf Benirschke, Ken O'Brien and Scott Barry; current head coaches Cy Williams and Jennifer Gross; and family friends Joan Smith-MacLean and Mike Campbell.
At the wishes of Sochor's family, Saturday's tribute event is meant to carry a lively, festive atmosphere that resembles an Aggie football game day. The Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh will provide entertainment, the slate of tribute speakers will be divided into two halves with a halftime break, and a "Fifth Quarter Huddle" reception will take place on the field after the ceremonies. Whole Foods has provided drinks and light refreshments, although fans are encouraged to bring their own beverages and snacks as well.
