UC Davis Makes the Grade with NCAA APR Rates

May 14, 2014

DAVIS, Calif.- Led by the women's tennis team which posted a perfect 1000 mulit-year Academic Progress Rate and was honored with an NCAA Public Recognition Award last week, seven UC Davis teams - including football and men's basketball - posted the highest APR scores in their respective conferences, according to information released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

Comprised of both student-athlete retention and eligibility, APR calculations help measure classroom performance of all student-athletes. A score of 930 is the benchmark for teams to avoid penalties from the NCAA. Of UC Davis' 23 varsity teams, 14 had APR's of at least 980 and 19 were above 970.

In addition to football (972), which led the Big Sky Conference for the second year in a row, and men's basketball (974), which had the best APR in the Big West, other teams that posted leading scores for their leagues included women's water polo (993) and men's soccer (984) in the Big West, and women's gymnastics (997) in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Women's tennis (1000) and women's volleyball (989) both tied for their sports' highest APR scores in the Big West. Women's tennis has posted a perfect score in all seven years it's been measured.

Women's basketball (988) and baseball (973) were each second in the Big West while women's soccer (991), softball (985) and women's outdoor track and field (985) were third in the league. Field hockey (991) was third in the NorPac Conference while men's water polo (978) was third-best in the Western Water Polo Association.

"We're very proud of how our student-athletes perform with their teams, but we're especially proud of how hard they work in the classroom," said Terry Tumey, Director of Athletics. "Combined with our recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate, which was highest in the Big West, our student-athletes are representing UC Davis very well."

The most recent APRs are multi-year rates covering the 2009-10 through 2012-13 academic years.
