Davis, Calif. - UC Davis wrapped up an opening weekend home stand on Saturday afternoon, completing both scheduled games against Saint Mary's.
With Friday's opener suspended due to darkness in the middle of the ninth, the bottom of the inning was played on Saturday afternoon, finalizing a 4-2 Saint Mary's. The Gaels (2-0) went on to take the regularly schedule Saturday afternoon game 9-3.
UC Davis (0-2) got six innings from
Kaden Riccomini in the latter game with
Kai Janowicz,
Andrew LaCour and
Leroy Yau going the rest of the way. Yau threw one inning of scoreless relief in his collegiate debut while LaCour struck out one and didn't allow a hit.
The Aggies got on the board in the 2nd with
Kyler Arenado singling and going first-to-third on a passed ball and a wild pitch before scoring on a groundout by
Omar Plascencia. UC Davis got more small ball in the 5th with
Jonah Henrickson reaching on a walk, stealing second and later scoring on a groundball by
Mark Wolbert that Saint Mary's misplayed for an error.
The Aggies' struck again in the eighth with
Nathan Peng hitting a pinch-hit double and
J.D. Mico's pinch-hit single bringing in
Riley Acosta, running for Peng.
In the season-opener that began Friday afternoon,
Nate Freeman battled through five innings, allowing two earned runs while working around seven baserunners and
Bryan Green pitched three strong innings of relief. In his first collegiate appearance, Green allowed just one hit and no walks on 33 pitches.
The Gaels scored first on a single in the top of the second but answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Jake Brandel led off with a walk, advanced to third on a single by
Mark Wolbert and later scored on a wild pitch. After Saint Mary's retook the lead on a single in the top of the third, Freeman ended a bases loaded jam by getting a double play ball to end the inning. That kept UC Davis within 2-1 before a towering, one-out home run by
Raul Sandoval in the bottom of the fifth.
Green relieved Freeman to start the sixth and kept the game scoreless until Saint Mary's got to
Nathan Peng in the top of the ninth for two runs.
UC Davis went quietly in the bottom half of the ninth on Saturday though to start the unusual double-header.
The Aggies will travel to Saint Mary's on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matinee and return to Dobbins Stadium next Tuesday to face San Francisco.
