SANTA BARARA, Calif. - Junior Sarah Starks went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, but the UC Davis Aggies comeback bid fell short on Saturday, 5-3. After the series, the Ags move to 26-17 overall and 12-9 in Big West Conference play.
Junior Kenedi Brown (13-8) was tagged with the loss. Freshman Caroline Grimes came out of the bullpen and threw four scoreless innings, allowing seven hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
On top of Starks, senior Delaney Diaz batted 2-for-2 with an RBI. Junior Anna Dethlefson also chipped in, going 1-for-4 for UC Davis with an RBI.
Trailing 4-0, the Aggies first put runs on the board in the third inning. UC Davis got an RBI single from Dethlefson, scoring Grace Kilday from second base.
The Gauchos expanded their lead to 5-1 before the Aggies offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fifth. UC Davis scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Diaz, which brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Gauchos.
UC Davis held the Gauchos off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 5-3 in the sixth. The Aggies recorded a run on Starks' one-out RBI double. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as UCSB secured the series victory.
UC Davis will return home for a three-game series against Cal Poly. The three-game set will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 6.
