Jan. 31, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis indoor track and field opens its 2018 season with a 14-woman contingent to the annual New Mexico Classic this Friday and Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mex.

Aside from the Aggies, there will be 17 Division I teams, including No. 8 Texas, No. 9 LSU, No. 10 Ole Miss, No. 14 Alabama, and Causeway rival Sacramento State, who is currently ranked No. 14 in the West Region.

UC Davis enters the 2018 track and field season this weekend with five juniors: Mikaela Adolphus (200, 400), Emily Antonino (600, 800), Erinn Beattie (60 hurdles, shot put), Stasia Kubicki (polo vault), and Natsumi McGee (60, 200), along with four other Aggie veterans: sophomores Haley Adel (3,000), Baileigh Akins (60m hurdles), and Kierra Davis (60 hurdles, 60, 800), and senior Emma Redick (600, 800).

Going into the 2018 season, McGee and Davis are ranked second and third, respectively, in school history for the 100m, both posting close times of 11.70 and 11.71 at the 2017 Big West Championships. Davis also ranks second in the 200m event behind Ashley Marshall’s time of 23.25, set during the 2013 season.

In the 400, Adolphus now ranks second in school history after receiving a 54.55 time at last season’s Big West Championships, while Akins holds the second through fifth fastest times in the school record book for the 100 hurdles.

Beattie set the high jump school record after her 1.80m performance at the 2017 Big West Championships, besting Morgan Bertsch’s short-lived school record jump of 1.78m earned at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge.

Among other jumpers, Kubicki is ranked second in school history in the pole vault, behind Emily Bush, after completing a 3.92m jump at last season’s Big West Championships.

Redick, the lone senior veteran participating at the 2018 New Mexico Classic, holds the second through 10th fastest times in the school record book for the 400 hurdles, with her second-ranked time coming from the first-place finish received at the UNLV Invitational.

The annual New Mexico Classic will serve as the UC Davis debut for five newcomers. Sofia Ries, also a member of the UC Davis women’s cross country team, did not compete in the 2017 cross country season; however, prior to becoming an Aggie, she ran the 400, 800, 1500, and 1600 events as a high school senior.

Flora Oliveira, a Belo Horizonte, Brazil, native, was a CIF Finals qualifier her last three years at Atla Loma High School, as well as a CIF Masters qualifier as a high school senior.

Alexis Sutherland, a Corona High School graduate, became the school record holder in both the 100 and 200 as a junior, and received her school’s MVP award during her last three years of high school, as well as Scholar Athlete of the Year award as a senior.

Kieana Butler and Kayla Gibson, the two transfer student-athletes, competed the most recent track season at Mt. SAC and Mount San Antonio, respectively. Butler set both her 100 and 200 career best times during the 2017 outdoor season, while Gibson set her personal best time in the 400 run.

A live stream of this event will be available for FloTrack subscribers here, while meet results for the New Mexico Classic can be found here.
