BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Matt Casto and Eddie Fernandez each won two events for the UC Davis men against powerful Cal State Bakersfield, while Abbey Cornell won twice for the Aggie women, as UC Davis split a pair of swimming and diving duals against the Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon.
UC Davis won the women's competition with a 132-111 victory while the Roadrunner men beat their Aggie counterparts, 173-121.
The meet between teams that have long been at the top of the Division II swimming scene is traditionally fast and Saturday's matchup was no different.
The Aggie women captured six races in their dual, including Cornell's wins in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke. She won the 200 fly in a season-best time of 2 minutes, 9.32 seconds before later winning the 200 backstroke as well with a clocking of 2:10.64. Cornell also swam anchor on the Aggies' winning 400 freestyle relay, which touched in 3:40.86.
UC Davis also earned victories on the women's side from Zahra Shahalayi in the 200 individual medley (2:11.51), Hannah Watanabe in the 100 freestyle (54.74) and Michelle Jennings in the 500 freeestyle (5:05.44). Jennings' time marked a season-best.
UC Davis beat the Roadrunners for the second consecutive year.
Casto, who already owns four school records for the Aggies in just his first season with the Aggies, nearly lowered his own mark in the 100 butterfy. He won Saturday's race in 49.77, just off the time of 49.65 he earned last Sunday at Seattle. That time broke a nearly 24-year old record at UC Davis.
Casto also won the 200 butterfly on Saturday, hoping to add that school record as well. His time of 1:51.95 puts him fourth on the all-time list and was just off the school record of 1:50.08 set by Lenn Rosenberg at the 1980 NCAA Division II Championships.
Fernandez was also a double-winner for the Aggies against the Roadrunenrs, capturing the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 58.95 and then returning to the pool alter in the meet to win the 200 breaststroke as well. His time of 2:07.14 was another season-best.
Patrick Jacobsen won the 50 free in 20.94 for UC Davis' only other win, a time that was just one-hundredth of a second off his career-best time. He is currently tied for fifth in the Aggie recordbook in the event.
Both Aggie teams are at San Francisco State next Saturday for a dual matchup with the Gators.
