LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Davis edged Cal State Bakersfield in the men's 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday night while the Aggie women set a school record in the 800 freestyle relay, highlighting Wednesday's opening day at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships at Belmont Plaza Pool.

Through two events, the men's team has 118 points, just two behind defending champion Cal State Bakersfield while the women are in third with 112, only six points back of UC San Diego.

The Aggie men posted a season-best time of 1 minute, 33:07 seconds in the 200 medley relay, defeating the Roadrunners who were a close second in 1:33.52. Kyle Wooldridge, Eddie Fernandez, Matt Casto and Patrick Jacobson made up the Aggies' conference championship relay.

UC Davis had a record-setting 800 free relay for the second consecutive year as Vanessa Sallee, Rachelle Compton, Michelle Jennings and Yuka Kobayashi finished second on Wednesday with a time of 7:39.91. That mark broke the previous school record of 7:42.55 established at last year's PCSC Championships. Sallee and Compton swam on that team as well.

Women's 3-meter diving was contested on Wednesday but the scores have yet to be added into the team totals. Kira Bonini was the Aggies' top finisher, scoring 328.90 points and placing 10th. Hannah Ures was 11th with 317 and Cyndie Thompson as 12th with 316.60. Lauren Eger and Valerie Moore were 14th and 15th, respectively.

Wednesday's opening action was limited with Thursday's schedule featuring the first individual swim events. UC Davis is participating in its final PCSC Championships before entering Big West Conference competion in 2005. This year's meet concludes on Saturday night.

UC Davis captured last year's PCSC championship on the women's side.
