LONG BEACH, Calif. - Yuka Kobayashi, a three-time individual champion at last year's Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships, won the 100-yard backstroke for the second straight year, Matt Jones won the men's 100 back, and Matt Casto broke a pair of his own school records during Friday's competition at Belmont Plaza Pool.

With just one day remaining, both Aggie teams are in second place. The Aggie men have 882 points and trail only Cal State Bakersfield which has 931. The UC Davis women's team has 792 points while leader UC San Diego has 944.

On Thursday, Brad Kern became UC Davis' second consecutive 1-meter diving champion when he captured the title. Results of the event weren't available until Friday.

Kobayashi broke nine school records as a freshman last year, capturing a trio of conference championships along the way. On Friday, she added another individual championship - her school-record fourth - as she successfuly defended her 100 back title won a year ago. Kobayashi went out in 27.25 seconds for the first 50 yards of the race, leading Lauren Mathewson at the halfway point, Kobayashi then expanded her lead and won in 56.19 with Mathewson coming in second at 57.25.

Kobayashi also won PCSC titles last year n the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly events.

Jones won UC Davis' seventh-ever 100 backstroke title at the PCSC Championships, racing to a time of 24.92 in the opening 50 yards then racing home to a clocking of 50.64. He beat Corigan Bemis of Seattle, who was second in 51.13.

Casto, meanwhile, continued his impressive season for the Aggies, breaking school records he broke earlier this season. He opened his day by taking second in the 100 butterfly in 49.43, tying the same mark he achieved in the morning's prelims and eclipsing the 49.65 he achieved at Seattle on Jan. 18. His earlier mark broke Dan Camilli's school record of 49.88 set in 1980.

Casto returned later to post a time of 55.40 in the 100 breaststroke, becoming the first Aggie swimmer to ever go under 56 seconds in the event. His time of 56.41 at the Speedo Cup in November - also held at Belmont Plaza Pool - broke Eric Holden's mark of 56.50 set in 1989. Casto's time on Friday was the event's fastest but he raced as an exhibition so his time did not earn UC Davis any points.

UC Davis posted nine individual top-10 finishes on the men's side on Friday, including impressive second-place finishes by Patrick Jacobson in the 200 freestyle (1:41.45) and Cameron Poya in the 100 breaststroke (57.59). Kevin Williams placed third in the 200 freestyle, while Jacob Damante and Eddie Fernandez earned fourths in the 400 individual medley and 100 breaststroke events, respectively.

The Aggies' 400 medley relay team of Jones, Cameron Poya, Casto and Jacobson was second in 3:22.68.

The UC Davis women had three top-10 individual finishes during Friday's third day of competition. Vanessa Sallee posted the highest finish, taking an outstanding second in the 400 individual medley in 4:32.91. Freshman Hannah Watanabe also finished well, placing third in the 100 butterfly in 56.41.

UC Davis also placed second in the 400 medley relay as Kobayashi, Zahra Shahalayi, Watanabe and Sallee touched in 3:53.01.

Hannah Ures (319.30) and Cyndie Thompson (304.90) were sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 1-meter diving competition, Abbey Cornell finished ninth in the 100 butterfly and Christina Droubay was 10th in the 400 individual medley.

Kern scored 388.89 points on Thursday to claim the 1-meter diving title, edging Justin Pollock of Cal State Bakersfield, who was second with 381.95. Logan Champion palced sixth in 285.35 points. Champion won last year's 1-meter championship.

The four-day meet concludes on Saturday evening.
