MONTEREY PARK, Calif. -- Five Aggies advanced to championship finals and 11 swimmers overall earned second swims on the day, helping UC Davis move up one spot into third place after two full days of competition at the 2017 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Wednesday in Southern California.
Thanks to 44 individual points in the 200 IM and 23 more in the 50 free, the Aggies finished day two with 193 points to stand behind Hawai'i (272) and UC Santa Barbara (208).
Senior Marissa Brown opened the day by finishing third in the prelims of the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:50.68, shaving nearly nine seconds off her previous season best, and wrapped up her day with a sixth-place finish in the finals with a time of 4:52.92.
That set the stage for the best event of the day for UC Davis, which qualified four swimmers into a scoring final of the 200 IM and saw five individuals set season-best times in the event. Senior Elise Roberts led the way, finishing fourth in a time of 2:02.17, while Iris Brand (2:04.05) and Mia Facey (2:05.30) finished among the top eight after setting their season-best marks in the prelims.
Eva Chung added a 12th-place finish in a time of 2:05.03, while Kristen Schumann finished 20th overall with a finals time of 2:06.53. Sophomore Solie Laughlin also set a season-best in the event, and collected her second NCAA "B" cut in the 200 IM this season, with an exhibition swim of 1:59.74 which would have ranked second among the finals field.
UC Davis added another 23 points in the 50 free, with five more student-athletes earning second swims, as Kirsten Brand finished sixth in the championship final with a time of 23.09 -- the second fastest time by an Aggie in the event this season and just .02 off her prelims time that was a season best and just .08 off the NCAA "B" standard, placing her third.
Jamie Pincin finished 12th with a time of 23.73, Aislinn Dresel ended the day 14th with a time of 23.83, and Courtney Schultz added a 15th place finish with a time of 23.95, to all earn crucial points for the Aggies. Mia Cunnan finished 21st with a time of 23.98 to round out the UC Davis contingent in the finals.
The Aggies then closed out the swimming portion by finishing fourth in the 200 free relay, touching in a season-best time of 1:32.80.
Meanwhile at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, Calif., the divers got their first taste of championship action, led by senior Serena Yee, who finished 10th in the championship round with a score of 239.10. Shaifali Goyal (237.95), Jessica Fernandez (230.10), Inessa Toropov (230.05), and Angelina Proshak (224.30), posted top-15 finishes, with Ani Vermury just behind in 16th with a score of 201.10.
Day three of competition begins on Friday (Feb. 17) at 10 a.m. with the prelims and finals of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3-Meter diving, and the 400 medley relay.
