MONTEREY PARK, Calif. -- Sophomore Solie Laughlin successfully defended her conference title in the 200 backstroke in meet record time, while Marissa Brown and diver Shaifali Goyal also set school records on the day, helping UC Davis finish third at the 2017 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships on Saturday night in Monterey Park, Calif.
The Aggies finished with 593 points to finish behind champion Hawai'i (717) and second-place UC Santa Barbara (623.5). The Rainbow Wahine claimed their second MPSF title in the last three seasons, also winning the title in 2015.
Brown opened the meet for UC Davis by finishing third overall in the 1,650 free with a season-best time of 16:47.58, finishing less than three seconds off her own school record set in 2013. It was her 1,000-yard split, however, that put her in the record books as her time of 10:04.42 broke Samantha Shellem's mark of 10:04.98 from 2013.
After setting a school and meet record in defending her conference title in the 400 IM on Friday, Laughlin was up to her old tricks in defending her crown in the very next event, finishing the 200 back with a winning time of 1:55.37, eclipsing the previous MPSF Championships record set by BYU's Hailey Campbell in 2012 by nine one-hundreths of a second.
The win made the sophomore from Ventura, Calif., a perfect 3-for-3 in MPSF title defenses from her freshman season after winning both the 400 IM and 100 back on Friday.
Sophomore Iris Brand finished eighth in the championship final with a time of 2:04.02, while freshman Mia Cunnan also picked up points with a 14th place finish in a time of 2:04.36.
Senior Kirsten Brand led the way with a seventh-place finish in the 100 free, touching in a time of 51.07, while freshman Jamie Pincin finished 10th overall with a time of 50.98 in the consolation final -- the second-fastest time in the event by an Aggie this season. Senior Elise Roberts followed those performances by finishing second in the 200 breast in an NCAA "B" standard time of 2:13.78 -- her second NCAA "B" mark in the event this season, shaving more than a second off her previous season best set at the Phill Hansel Invite earlier in the year.
Three Aggies qualified for the championship final in the 200 fly with newcomer Olivia Smith finishing fifth in a time of 2:03.79 -- just .01 off her season-best set in the prelims earlier in the day. Freshman Cora McClelland finished seventh with a time of 2:05.20, while sophomore teammate Eva Chung was eighth in a time of 2:05.73.
Meanwhile, at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, Calif., Goyal, who established the school record on the platform last season, broke her own mark on Saturday night with a zone qualifying score of 229.90 to finish second in the event.
UC Davis then closed out the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay as the quartet of Pincin, Courtney Schultz, Iris Brand, and Kirsten Brand, finished with a season-best time of 3:23.16 -- nearly two seconds faster than the previous best set earlier this year in Houston.
