MONTEREY PARK, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's swimming and diving team began the defense of its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship with a school record and a pair of second place finishes in the first two events, Wednesday night, as the first day of competition came to a close at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif.

The Aggies finished second behind UC Santa Barbara (1:39.87) in both the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay to kick-off the meet, including by the slimmest of margins in the former after the Gauchos out-touched UC Davis by .02 to take first place despite a school record time of 1:39.89 from the Aggies. UC Davis' time was better than a second faster than its top 2013-14 season time and bested the previous school mark of 1:40.42 set at last season's MPSF Championships by the foursome of Hilary Hunt, Liliana Alvarez, Megan Leung, and Haley Porter.

In this year's opening race, Hunt and Alvarez gave the Aggies a lead of seven-tenths after the first two legs before UCSB rallied behind senior Andrea Ward, who swam the third leg almost a second faster for the Gauchos to make up the gap. The Aggies responded with a 22.62 in the anchor leg by senior Haley Porter, but fell just short at the wall.

In the 800 free relay, the team of Samantha Shellem, Katie Edwards, Kirsten Brand, and Haley Porter, touched in a time of 7:17.94 to finish more than a second back of UC Santa Barbara, which touched in a time of 7:16.42.

The four-day MPSF Championships continue with the first full day of competition on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. with the prelims of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, with the finals of those three events, plus the 200 free relay, to follow at 6 p.m. The diving competition also gets underway at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, Calif., with the 1-meter prelims and finals in the afternoon.
