MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - UC Davis posted a school-record time of one minute, 40.28 seconds in the 200-yard medley relay, then followed with a school and championship benchmark of 7:14.45 in a dominating 800 free relay win, kicking off the third Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimming championships at East Los Angeles College Wednesday night.

The Aggies took an early lead in the team competition with 74 points, two ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara.

The foursome of Hilary Hunt, Liliana Alvarez, Megan Leung and Haley Porter placed second in the 200 medley relay, just 14 hundredths of a second behind winner UC Santa Barbara's 1:40.28. Then in Wednesday's nightcap, the team of Samantha Shellem, Katie Edwards, Bridget Bugbee and Haley Porter broke the school and meet records with better than a six-second win over Hawai'i.

Additionally, Shellem's led off the free relay with a 200-yard split of 1:47.34. Not only did that spot the Aggies a lead of roughly two body lengths, but it missed Kayleigh Foley's UC Davis record of 1:47.29 by a half-tenth of a second. Not coincidentally, Foley led off the previous school and MPSF championship record of 7:15.42, set at the inaugural meet. Heidi Kucera, Bugbee and Linda Hermann completed the 2011 squad.

UC Davis also fielded a `B' team of Lauren Damian, Morgan Lee, Karley Troup and Sabrina Cochrane in the 200 medley relay. That crew compiled the best exhibition time of 1:43.59.

The four-day MPSF Championships continues with four events on Thursday: the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 individual medley and 50 free. Prelims start at 10 a.m. then finals commence at 6 p.m. The conference divers, competing at the U.S. Air Force Academy, also begin their championships on Thursday morning.
