MONTEREY PARK, Calif. -- Junior Samantha Shellem set school and meet records in the 500-yard freestyle while leading off the 200 free relay to another school mark to highlight UC Davis action on the second day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimming championships at East L.A. College Thursday.
Shellem finished the 500 free in four minutes, 45.60 seconds in breaking her own benchmark by almost exactly three seconds. She also surpassed 'B' qualifying standards for the NCAA Championships.
That race immediately succeeded the 200-yard free relay, which saw Shellem, Katie Edwards, Haley Porter and Hilary Hunt finishing third at 1:32.02 -- 87 seconds faster than the four-year-old mark of 1:33.29. Furthermore, Shellem's leadoff split of 23.49 moved her into the school's all-time 50 free leaderboard.
UC Davis gained ground in that 500 free, as freshman Marissa Brown finished second (4:50.65) and Bridget Bugbee placed fifth (4:53.54). Brown moved up to No. 2 in UC Davis history, replacing Bugbee's 4:52.29 from the 2010 Big West meet. The threesome of Shellem, Brown and Bugbee repressented 51 points just from the championship final. The Aggies picked up another seven points from Grace Benefield and Maya Sprinsock in the consol final, bumping their lead to 18 points ahead UCSB.
The Aggies gained additional ground in the 200 individual medley, as Edwards finished second at 2:00.43 while Sabrina Cochrane posted a PR of 2:02.19 in the prelim before securing sixth-place points with a 2:02.50 in the final. Sophomore Hilary Hunt also reached the final in the 50 free to close out the day. Her 23.37 in the prelim moved her into fourth in school history while her 23.59 in the evening session placed eighth. Porter chipped in seven points with her 10th-place time of 23.48 in the consols.
In action at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Lucy Lafranchise scored 247.85 in her preliminary round to advance to the final of the 1-meter diving competition. Lafranchise placed eighth in the event at 199.15 while fellow freshman Audrey DeNeffe improved from 205.10 in the prelim to 227.65 in the consolation.
Between the two sites, UC Davis finished Thursday's competition in second place with 229 points, just behind Hawaii (240) and ahead of BYU (216). The Aggies hope to regain their MPSF title won during the inaugural championships in 2011.
