MONTEREY PARK, Calif. -- UC Davis' Katie Edwards posted an NCAA "B" standard in the 200 IM and the Aggies' depth helped them surge into the lead on Thursday afternoon as day two of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close at East Los Angeles College.
UC Davis, which trailed UC Santa Barbara by a score of 80-68 after the first two events on Friday, moved ahead of the Gauchos after the five events on Friday to lead, 248-237, over UCSB, with BYU rounding out the top three with 202 points.
Edwards touched in a time of 2:01.04 in the 200 IM -- the fastest time by a UC Davis swimmer in the event this season -- to finish second behind UCSB's Sophia Yamauchi (2:00.23), as five swimmers in the event hit the NCAA "B" mark of 2:02.59.
It is the second NCAA "B" mark for Edwards this season -- and the 10th by an Aggie this season -- as the senior also met the standard in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.32 at the Mizzou Invitational back in November.
Five Aggies scored points in the event to offset four Gauchos in the championship finals as Sabrina Cochrane led the way, setting a season best with a 2:03.28 in the finals to finish seventh. In the consolation final, Elise Roberts (10th, 2:04.76), Liliana Alvarez (14th, 2:05.88), and Sam Rados (15th, 2:06.35), all scored points for UC Davis.
In the 500 free, UC Davis placed four in the championship finals to aid its comeback as Lexy Troup (4:49.19), Marissa Brown (4:49.29), and Samantha Shellem (4:51.10), posted the three fastest times by an Aggie this season in the event, finishing 3-4-5 behind the Gauchos' duo of Andrea Ward (NCAA "B" mark of 4:46.99) and Heren Alanis (4:48.81).
Maya Sprinsock (5:01.02) and Cara Silvas (5:06.72) also set season bests in the bonus (non-scoring) final.
In the 50 free, Haley Porter swam a season-best 23:02 to finish just .03 off the NCAA "B" mark, while teammate Hilary Hunt also scored points in the consolation final, finishing 13th with a time of 23.78.
Meanwhile, in Pasadena, Calif., the diving competition got underway, with Jennifer Meyer scoring points for the Aggies on the 1-meter, finishing fourth in the championship final with a six-dive total of 239.80 to place behind Hawaii's Aimee Harrison, who won the event with a score of 314.35. Meyer's finish came after she placed sixth in the preliminary round with a score of 238.70.
In the consolation final, Lucy Lafranchise finished first with a total of 250.90 as three Aggies were among the top eight. Audrey DeNeffe was fifth with a score of 227.00 while Hanna Tears was sixth with a score of 224.50.
The MPSF Championships continue with day three on Friday (Feb. 21) at 10 a.m. with the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 back, and the 400 medley relay, as well as the 3-meter diving competition from Pasadena. The finals for the swimming events will begin at 6 p.m.
