LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Yuka Kobayashi became UC Davis' first-ever Big West Conference champion by claiming the 100-yard backstroke title with a school-record time of 55.10 seconds in the final during the third day of that league's swimming and diving championships at the Belmont Plaza Friday. Meanwhile, sophomore diver Brad Kern posted the Aggies' top men's finish, placing second in the 1-meter diving competition.

Kobayashi's mark was one of several school records set by the Aggie women in Friday's action. Renee Dyer broke her own school 200 freestyle mark, finishing first in the preliminaries with a 1:50.70. She placed eighth in the evening's finals at 1:55.31. Jill Olson placed 3rd in 200 free with a career-best 1:51.79 in the finals, also surpassing Dyer's previous mark from earlier in the season.

Furthermore, Dyer briefly set a UC Davis 100 breaststroke record as a non-scoring competitor. She swam a 1:04.90 in the preliminaries, but teammate Ashley Cayford bested it with a third-place time of 1:04.13 in the final later that evening. Finally, the 400 medley relay squad of Kobayashi, Cayford, Hannah Watanabe and Olson set yet another school mark with a 3:47.48 time, more than four seconds faster than the previous mark set in January at UC San Diego.

Kern finished second in the 1-meter diving competition with a 528.10 total, well ahead of teammate Keith Abbott, who placed third with 425.95 points. Along with freshman Russell Taylor's third-place finish in Thursday's 200 individual medley, they are the highest Aggie men's placewinners in the Big West meet to date.

Kyle Payne was UC Davis' top finisher in the 400 individual medley. His seventh-place time of 4:05.79 in the finals moves him into the school's all-time top 10 in that event. Nik Kemp also entered his name among the Aggies' all-time 200 freestylers as his 1:40.32 in the prelims ranks him third in school history. Kemp went on to place 10th in the event with a 1:41.41 mark.

Additionally, Adam Pluemer's 51.43 in the 100 backstroke placed him 10th in the meet and sixth in UC Davis annals. Pluemer then improved that mark to 51.02 with his leadoff split of the Aggies' fourth-place 3:26.46 in the 400 medley relay. That relay squad of Pluemer, Payne, Taylor and Kemp improved on the previous season-best time by better than seven seconds.

The Aggie women hold on to third place in the team scoring with a 429.5 total. UC Irvine and Pacific continue to battle for the team title, holding totals of 565 and 510 points, respectively, through 14 events. The UC Davis men's team is in fourth place with 318.0, almost twice as many points as fifth-place Cal St. Northridge. The Tiger men hold a close 615-589 edge over second-place UC Santa Barbara in the race for team championship.

This is UC Davis' first year of competition at the Big West Conference championships. Although the school will not become official members of the league until 2007-08, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams were invited to participate in the conference meet this year, as voted by the Big West head coaches.

The conference championships conclude on Saturday, February 26.
