LONG BEACH, Calif. - Aggie junior Yuka Kobayashi set a school 200-yard backstroke record of one minute, 59.52 seconds to capture her second conference title and Renee Dyer matched her season-best 100 freestyle time of 51.42 to win her first, highlighting UC Davis women's action in the final day of the Big West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Belmont Plaza Saturday. Kobayashi had won the 100 backstroke the day before, also setting a UC Davis mark.

Kobayashi broke her own Aggie standard by better than two full seconds. She had gone 2:01.92 in that event at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference championships as a freshman in 2003. Her mark was one of four total school records set by the UC Davis women in the final day, including Ashley Cayford's fifth-place time of 2:20.51 in the 200 breaststroke. Cayford's mark beat by nearly seconds a 1988 record set by Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Famer Kristi Wheeler.

In addition her to win in the 200 breast, Kobayashi also became the first UC Davis women's swimmer to break the two-minute barrier in the 200 butterfly. She finished in 1:59.50 to take a close runner-up finish to champion Jennifer Schwalb of UC Santa Barbara. Schwalb won the race at 1:59.44. Finally, the 400 free relay squad of Hannah Watanabe, Jill Olson, Jennifer Ginsberg and Renee Dyer combined for a 3:28.36, beating the previous Aggie record by better than two seconds.

On the men's side, sophomore Brad Kern matched his 1-meter performance by posting a runner-up finish in the 3-meter diving competition. He scored 499.95, well ahead of teammate Yoshio Akaha, who took third at 372.75.

Kyle Leto and Lars Rockholm finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 1,650 freestyle. Leto's time of 16:09.55 now places him eighth all-time at UC Davis. Ryan Tucker's 11th-place 100 free time of 46.49 is the fastest by any Aggie this season and a second-and-a-half improvement over his previous best.

Dyer finished just ahead of Olson in the 100 free. Olson posted a season-best 52.42 in the prelims, then improved to 51.62 in the final to claim a second-place finish. Michelle Jennings cut more than 13 seconds off her previous lifetime-best mark in the 1,650 free to place third in the first women's race of the day.

Kyle Payne and Russell Taylor finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 200 breast. Payne trimmed more than a second from his lifetime best to touch in 2:05.10, while Taylor was right behind at 2:05.35. Taylor had a career-best 2:05.33 in the prelims to advance to the evening final.

In their first year in the Big West Conference championships, the UC Davis women's team posted a solid third-place finish with a 693.5 point total. The Aggie men finished fourth with a 494-point sum. UC Irvine won the women's team title with 821 points while the Pacific men claimed that championship with 881 ticks, just ahead of UC Santa Barbara's second-place total of 864.

UC Davis will officially join the Big West Conference in the 2007-08 athletics year. However, due to a decision by the league's head swimming coaches, the Aggie men and women were invited to participate in this year's meet.
