AUSTIN, Texas - Eddie Fernandez finished sixth in the final of the 200-yard breaststroke on Friday, Matt Jones was ninth in the 100 backstroke and UC Davis' 200 freestyle relay took fifth, highlighting the Aggies' action at the American Short CourseChampionships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Hannah Watanabe was 15th in the 200 butterfly, Ashley Elgas took 19th in the 200 breaststroke and the Aggies' 200 freestyle relay was 11th, helping the UC Davis women to another strong showing on the second day of competiton at the meet,which features some of the top swimmers in the country.
Fernandez earned a spot in the championship final of the 200 breaststroke, finishing sixth in 2 minutes, 4.12 seconds and helping the Aggies place four swimmers in the top 20. Besides Fernandez, Kyle Payne (2:07.31) was 13th, Cameron Poya (2:09.21) was 16th and Vincent Mecozzi (2:11.00) was 18th.
Jones, champion in the 100 backstroke at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships last month at Long Beach, placed ninth at the championships at Texas in 50.75. Michael Fahy and Kyle Wooldridge were 14th and 15th, respectively.
UC Davis then had its highest finish overall in the 200 freestyle relay, the day's final event. The Aggies' team of Matt Casto, Patrick Jacobson, Kevin Williams and Jones) was fifth in 1:23.12. Jacobson was also 11th in the 50 free in 20.68 while Williams took 18th. Matt Roper earned a second swim in the 500 freeestyle, finishing 20th in 4:43.69.
Watanabe posted the Aggie women's best individual finish on Friday, placing 15th in the 200 butterfly in 2:07.33 after going 2:06.19 in the prelims. Another top 20 finish came from Ashley Elgas who was 19th in the 200 breastroke in 2:27.60, just ahead of teammate Michelle Jennings, who finished 22nd in 2:28.76.
Rachelle Compton was 17th in the 500 freestyle in 5:05.87 while Vanessa Sallee placed 18th in 100 backstroke in 58.92. The Aggies' 200 freestyle relay of Compton, Sallee, Jessica Weeks and Watanabe was 11th in 1:39.77.
Competion in the three-day swim meet concludes on Saturday.
