AUSTIN, Texas - UC Davis placed fourth in the men's 400 medley relay during the final event of the 2004 American Short Course Championships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Saturday, while the Aggie women were 10th in their 400 medley relay race, bringing to a close UC Davis' season.
The championships, which served as part of the Aggies' postseason in lieu of the NCAA Division II Championships this season, featured some of the top collegiate and open swimmers in the United States. The Aggies swam well during the three-day meet, earning several top finishes and advancing to several evening races after qualifying in tough morning preliminaries..
The men concluded their championships by finishing fourth in the 400 medley. The Aggies' squad of Matt Jones, Eddie Fernandez, Matt Casto and Patrick Jacobson finished with a time of 3 minutes, 24.01 seconds, just behind Southern Methodist, which won with a time of 3:22.67..
The Aggie women's relay also fared well in the 400 medley, capturing 10th place in the tough field with a time of 4:04.50. Vanessa Sallee, Zahra Shahalayi, Hannah Watanabe and Abbey Cornell comprised UC Davis' team..
UC Davis had four top-20 finishes on the men's side, including an 11th place from Patrick Jacobson in the 100 freestyle, whose time of 45.65 was the fastest by an Aggie this year. Kevin Williams was 18th in 46.05. Matt Jones took 10th in the 200 backstroke in 1:49.85 while Michael Fahy was 17th in 1:51.27..
For the women. Sallee posted the highest individual finish during the final day of competition for the Aggies, earning 19th in the 200 backstroke in 2:06.69. Cornell was close behind in 2:08.46. Watanabe had UC Davis' only other individual swim in the evening's competition, placing 31st in the 100 freestyle in 54.21 after going 53.31 in the morning's prelims..
UC Davis, in its first year of transition to NCAA Division I, and as a result, not eligible for the Division II championships, enjoyed another strong season. The men captured the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships last month in Long Beach for their first conference title since 1993. The Aggie women finished second in their bid to defend their banner won in 2003..
