DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's swimming and diving team opened the 2009 dual meet season with a 161-139 loss to Nevada Friday afternoon at Schaal Aquatics Center. Freshman Bridget Bugbee, sophomore Kayleigh Foley and junior Linda Hermann each won two individual events to lead the Aggies.
Nevada's Marichi Gandionco led the Wolfpack with three individual victories.
The teams began the meet with the 200 yard medley relay and Nevada's "A" squad of Jeanette Tour, Margaret Doolittle, Gandionco and Heidi Ong won the event with a time of 1:46.44. The UC Davis "A" squad placed second with a time of 1:50.65.
Bugbee picked up her first win of the day in the 1000 freestyle when she clocked in with a season-best time of 10:32.09. Freshman Grace Benefield came in just behind Bugbee with a personal best time of 10:35.89. Senior Kathryn Jovino placed seventh in the event (11:10.85).
Hermann's first individual win was in the 200 freestyle where she recorded a time of 1:54.68. Buffy Ajimura was third overall with a season-best time of 1:58.54 and Katelyn Griffin came in fourth with a time of 1:58.55. Samantha Capozzo was seventh.
In the 100 backstroke, newcomer Ashley Chandler had a personal-best time of 58.64 but was outtouched by Nevada's Jeanette Tour and took second place in the event. Victoria Pichay and Samantha Lougee were fifth and sixth respectively.
Lisa Bender was the Aggies' top finisher in the 100 breaststroke. She came in second with a time of 1:08.65 while Alyssa Britt was third at 1:09.02. Freshman Morgan Lee clocked in at 1:09.10 to place fourth.
Hermann picked up her second win of the day with a season-best 2:05.31 in the 200 back. Griffin also had a season-best as she finished third in a time of 2:11.67. Lougee was sixth.
Nevada's Margaret Doolittle finished first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:22.34. Britt was UC Davis' top finisher in the event as she clocked in at a season-best 2:28.67 to finish second. Lee and Hanson finished third and fourth.
Bugbee's second win of the day came in the 500 freestyle where she and Benefield took the top two spots for the second time. Bugbee's time of 5:06.73 was a personal best and Benefield clocked in at 5:13.16. Alex Wells placed seventh in the event for the Aggies.
In the 100 fly, Gandionco had her first individual win of the day with a time of 57.41. Griffin was second with a time of 59.86 and Cadmus clocked in at 1:00.05 to finish third.
Gandionco picked up her third individual win of the day in the 400 IM with a time of 4:35.78. Dawson placed second for UC Davis with a season-best 4:41.13. Hanson was fourth (4:45.54) while Julie Peri was seventh.
Nevada's "A" 200 free relay squad came in first in the final event of the day with a time of 1:38.08. The UC Davis "A" team of Hermann, Cadmus, Lee and Foley was second with a time of 1:38.47.
In the diving events, Nevada took the top three spots on both boards to give the Wolfpack the edge in points. Erica Stricker was UC Davis' top finisher as she placed fourth in the 1-meter event with a score of 198.83 and fourth in the 3-meter event with a score of 219.15.
UC Davis returns to action Saturday, Oct. 24 when the men's and women's swimming and diving teams host UC Santa Cruz at Schaal Aquatics Center at noon.
