STOCKTON, Cailf. - Junior Karley Troup placed third in the women's 200-yard butterfly with a time of two minutes, 8.60 seconds while distance freestylers Samantha Shellem and Marissa Brown made their Aggie debuts by posting the fastest 500 free times for a season-opening meet in school history to highlight UC Davis action at the Pacific Invitational collegiate swim meet at Chris Kjeldsen Pool Saturday morning.

Shellem, a junior transfer from California, placed fourth in the 500 with a time of 5:00.90, just ahead of the freshman Brown, who went 5:01.72. The previous Aggie best for an October opener had been Linda Hermann's 5:02.42, set at the Pacific Invite in 2008.

Troup's third-place showing matched that of sophomore Hilary Hunt and junior Haley Porter for the highest UC Davis finish of the day. Hunt went 2:06.40 in the 200 back, a seven-second improvement over her start to the 2011 season. Porter, another junior transfer making her debut in an Aggie cap, touched in a time of 52.94. She finished better than a third of a second ahead of her teammate Hunt in that event, who placed sixth at 53.24.

Junior Liliana Alvarez finished fourth in the 200 breast at 2:22.14. Besides Brown, Hunt and Shellem, team co-captain Sabrina Cochrane also nailed a pair of top-eight finishes, placing sixth in the 200 individual medley at 2:09.81 and eighth in the 200 backstroke with a 2:10.49 effort. Brown and Shellem finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 200 IM.

Sophomore Sara Ramos was another Aggie to finish among the top eight in two events, placing seventh in the 200 fly at 2:10.47 then sixth in the 100-yard version of the event with a 58.31 clocking.

"This meet gave us a chance to see how we swim our races, as in the strategy of it," said head coach Barbara Jahn. "We'll go back to the pool and focus on bringing it back stronger, or on turns that need to be cleaned up. It gives us a checklist of things to work on. But overall, it was a good meet. There's no pressure - we didn't focus on places so it let [the swimmers] focus on strategy and technique rather than trying to beat an opponent."

UC Davis also fielded four squads in the day's opening event, the 200 free relay. The `A' foursome of Porter, Katie Edwards, Morgan Lee and Hunt tied Pacific for third place with a time of 1:37.14.

The Aggies return to action on Saturday, October 27, joining their divers for a home dual meet with San Jose State. Meet time is 11 a.m. at Schaal Aquatics Center.
