COLUMBIA, Mo. -- UC Davis junior Hilary Hunt set a school record in the 100 back and was one of three Aggies to post NCAA "B" standards on the day, highlighting day two efforts at the sixth-annual Mizzou Invitational on Friday in Columbia, Mo.
It was the second school record in as many days for the UC Davis swimmers after the Aggies set a school mark in the 400 medley relay in Thursday's opening day. Hunt touched the wall in a time of 53.68 in prelims to surpass Ashley Chandler's mark of 54.03 set during the 2010 Big West Conference Championships and bested the NCAA "B" standard of 55.09 in the event for this year's NCAA Championships in the spring.
The Los Gatos, Calif., native eventually placed third in the finals later in the evening with a time of 54.18.
Two more Aggies met the "B" standard of 1:02.49 in the 100 breaststroke prelims as senior Liliana Alvarez touched in a time of 1:00.49 to finish second in her heat while senior Katie Edwards accomplished the feat with a time of 1:02.32 to give UC Davis two swimmers in the championship finals.
Alvarez, who finished fourth in the finals with a time of 1:01.24, narrowly missed Heidi Kucera's 2009 school record in the event with her prelim time, missing out on the mark by .11 seconds. Edwards finished eighth in the finals with a time of 1:02.57.
Five other Aggies also posted top-10 finishes on the day as the 200 medley relay team of Hunt, Alvarez, Hilvy Cheung, and Haley Porter, kicked-off the day play placing third in a season-best time of 1:41.18.
Sophomore Lexy Troup (4:25.09) finished seventh in the championship final in the 400 IM while sophomore Marissa Brown (4:23.07) won the "B" final in a season-best time. In the 200 free, junior Samantha Shellem was seventh in a season-best time of 1:49.23, while Cheung was 10th in the 100 back with a time of 56.16.
Volunteer assistant coach Scott Weltz competed in only one event on Friday, winning the "B" final of the 100 breaststroke and finishing ninth overall with a time of 54.74. He is scheduled to compete in the 200 fly and 200 breaststroke on Saturday's final day of competition.
The event concludes with the final seven events on Saturday with prelims beginning at 8 a.m. (PT) and finals following at 4 p.m. (PT). Platform diving, the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 1,650 free are on tap.
