PACIFICA, Calif. - Freshman Adam Pluemer advanced to the finals in three events while fellow freshmen Jason Kim and Nik Kemp made the final six in two others to highlight UC Davis' first day of the Pacific Swimming Senior Short-Course Trials and Finals Winter Championships in Pacifica Monday.

All Aggies competed as unattached entrants in the predominantly club meet, hosted by the South Valley Swim Team. The meet consisted of preliminary rounds in the morning, from which as many as four heats of six advanced to finals.

Pluemer took fourth in the 200-yard backstroke, fifth in the 100 back and improved nearly three seconds on his season best to take fourth in the 400 individual medley at 4:20.93. Kim finished third in the 100 back at 54.45 and added a fourth-place 22.39 in the 50 free. Kemp was fourth in the 100 free at 48.03 and 5th in the 500 free at 4:44.76.

Another freshman, Russell Taylor, placed third in the 200 fly with a 1:56.34 mark, the fastest mark by any Aggie this season and easily surpassing the standard for the U.S. Swimming American Short-Course Championships in March. Sophomore Kyle Payne took fourth in the 200 breast at 2:13.42. He went 2:12.12 in the prelims, improving on his season-best mark and his standing toward the American Short-Course Championships.

Vincent Mecozzi turned in a 4:24.21 in the prelims of the 400 IM, but improved by nearly four seconds to win the consolation final at 4:20.85. Ryan Driscoll improved from 4:35.10 to 4:29.30, while Lars Rockholm went from 4:37.29 to 4:32.16 in that event.

Patrick Jacobson won both sprint free races, posting a 21.31 in the 50 free and a 47.64 in the 100 free. Jacobson, who captured the 50 free title at last year's Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference championships, is redshirting the 2004-05 season.
