DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's swimming and diving team rings in the New Year with its first competitions of 2014, splitting the squad for its opening weekend. The Aggie divers will spend their weekend in Southern California at the Bruin Diving Invitational hosted by UCLA beginning on Friday (Jan. 10) while the swimmers will host their first dual meet of the season against Fresno State on Saturday (Jan. 11) at Noon.

UC Davis is looking to build off a stellar start to its campaign that saw the team finish the fall portion of its schedule with a perfect 4-0 dual meet mark and strong showings at the Mizzou Invitational at the end of November, setting four school records and posting seven NCAA "B" standards.

The Bruin Diving Invitational begins at 11 a.m. on Friday with the women's 1-meter preliminaries and finals, the 3-meter prelims and finals on Saturday (Jan. 11) at 11 a.m., and the platform competition on Sunday (Jan. 12) at 9:30 a.m.

The Bulldogs head north after opening 2014 with a dual meet loss to CSU Bakersfield, ending a four-meet winning streak. Fresno State is 4-2 in dual meets this season, posting wins over Pacific, Fresno Pacific, UC Santa Cruz, and Cal State East Bay, while finishing fourth at the Arena Invitational behind San Diego State, San Jose State, and Hawaii, and seventh at the Phil Hansel Invitational in Houston.

UC Davis has won all four meetings with the Bulldogs since Fresno State's program was revived for the 2008-09 campaign, including a 195-105 win last season at the Bulldogs' pool. The two programs last met in Davis during the 2010-11 season, posting a 170-124 victory.

Those Aggies with NCAA "B" marks thus far this season include freshman Hilvy Cheung in the 100 fly (54.35) and 200 fly (a school-record 1:57.60), junior Hilary Hunt in the 100 (a school-record 53.68) and 200 back (a school-record 1:57.96), senior Liliana Alvarez in the 100 (1:00.49) and 200 (2:13.22) breaststroke, and senior Katie Edwards in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.32).

Hunt, Alvarez, Cheung, and senior Haley Porter, also teamed up for a school record time of 3:38.47 in the 400 medley relay.

On the boards, sophomores Lucy Lafranchise and Hannah Tears have also met the NCAA standards on the 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively. Lafranchise scored a 271.27 on the 1-meter in a double-dual against San Diego and Oregon State back on Nov. 2, while Tears' score of 292.65 at San Jose State on Oct. 26 met the requirements on the 3-meter.

Following a busy weekend, the Aggies hit the road for their next two meets, making the short jaunt to Stockton for a dual with Pacific on Jan. 18 at Noon, before heading to Bakersfield on Jan. 19 for a 1 p.m. dual with the Roadrunners.
