DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Haley Porter was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Turbo Female Athlete of the Week on Wednesday after helping the Aggies complete the first undefeated dual meet season in school history.
The senior from Colfax, Calif., gave UC Davis back-to-back awards as her award comes on the heels of freshman Hilvy Cheung's weekly honor on Jan. 22. Porter is the third Aggie award-winner this season along with Liliana Alvarez, who was also named the conference's athlete of the week on Nov. 27.
Porter kicked off the week by winning both freestyle events and took part in a pair of first-place relays to help lead UC Davis over rival UC Santa Barbara, 176-124. She edged the Gauchos' Sophia Yamauchi in the 50 free with a time of 23.82, then immediately followed that up with a winning time of 51.24 in the 100 free -- the latter marking the second-fastest time in the history of the Schaal Aquatics Center. She also swam the freestyle portion of the winning 200 medley relay team, which set a pool record of 1:42.52 and also led-off the winning 400 free relay squad, which finishing with a time of 3:28.40.
Two days later against Loyola Marymount in a 178-116 victory, Porter swam the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay (1:45.77) to kick-off the meet and added a winning time of 52.02 in the 100 free. She also finished second in the 50 free with a time of 24.24.
UC Davis now sets its sights on defending its crown at the 2014 MPSF Championships, which run from Feb. 19-22 in Southern Cailfornia. The swimming events begin on Wednesday (Feb. 19) at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif., with the diving competition jumping off on Thursday (Feb. 20) from the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena, Calif.
