Stockton, Calif. (Chris Kjeldson Pool)
DAVIS, Calif. — The UC Davis women’s swimming and diving team will make its way to Stockton, Calif. this Saturday (Feb. 3) to take on Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference foe, Pacific, at 12 p.m. at the Chris Kjeldson Pool, for the Aggies’ final dual competition of the 2017-18 season.
The Aggies enter Saturday’s meet with an even 5-5 dual meet record on the season and 1-1 mark in the MPSF. At their most recent competitions, the Aggies split a pair of duals at Schaal Aquatics Center, falling short to the Gauchos, 150-144, then bouncing back with a quick turnaround victory the next day over San Jose State, 196-102.
The Aggies racked up 11 of 14 individual event wins against the Spartans, accompanied by ten second-place finishes and two sweeps between both swimming and diving events. Senior Courtney Schultz tallied a team high 27 points on the day, tripling in the 200 free, 50 free, and 100 free, in addition to swimming the lead off leg for the winning 400 free relay. Three other Aggies doubled on the day including junior Eva Chung in the 200 IM and 200 fly, junior Kristin Schumann in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, and freshman Paige Lampron 1000 free and 500 free.
On the boards, freshman Katie Truong’s NCAA Zone Qualifying dive of 270.67 points ranked her second overall in the one-meter program, while junior Jessica Fernandez finished second on the day in the 3-meter program with a score of 265.80 points.
Meanwhile, the Tigers look to bounce back after falling, 151-137, to conference colleague UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 20, their second dual contest of the season. Back in October, the Tigers fell to CSU Bakersfield by a margin of 184.5-114.5.
In the MPSF rankings, Pacific is represented in the top-5 fastest times for eight of the 14 individual events, with senior Kenna Ramey holding the fastest time in the league for the 50 free (23.11) and second fastest time for the 100 fly (53.70), while sophomore Angela Gagliardo ranks second in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.94) and third overall in the 400 IM (4:21.95).
Saturday marks the final tune-up contest for UC Davis before heading to Southern California to compete in the MPSF Championships, scheduled to take place on Feb. 14-17. For the seventh consecutive season, the swimming events will be held at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif., with action beginning at 10 a.m. each day, while the diving competitions will be held at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena, Calif., with action beginning on Thursday, Feb. 15.
