DAVIS, Calif. -- The 2015-16 UC Davis women's swimming and diving team kicks-off its campaign this weekend, welcoming alumnae from seasons past for the annual Blue-Gold Intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m., at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
The roster will be divided into two teams, competing for squad bragging rights over 16 events in the Aggies inaugural competition of the season. The first of five home events for UC Davis this season, the Aggies officially open their 2015-16 slate on Friday (Oct. 30) at Nevada before welcoming Loyola Marymount to Davis in the team's home opener on Halloween.
Among those swimming and diving alumnae who are scheduled to be in attendance, include NCAA Champion and Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Famer Koren Pollock Motekaitis, mid-major All-Americans Bridget Bugbee and Liliana Alvarez, conference champions Jenah Dawson and Jennifer Meyer, as well as a number of former Aggie standouts who are listed among the all-time best times in school history.
UC Davis returns 24 letter winners off of last season's squad that finished 5-2 in duals, was a perfect 4-0 against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rivals, and finished second at the conference championships in February. Junior Hilvy Cheung, the defending MPSF champion in both the 100 and 200 fly, along with fellow All-MPSF first-team honorees Hailey Ferko (400 medley relay) and Marissa Brown (1650 free) lead the charge, part of a larger group of 11 Aggies who earned all-conference honors at last season's MPSF Championships.
A highly decorated class of nine newcomers joins the fray, a group that includes Ventura, Calif., freshman Solie Laughlin, who has qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in both the 100 and 200 back, and All-Americans Eva Chung (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Kristin Schumann (Danville, Calif.), as well as standouts Mia Facey (Napa, Calif.), Keely Johnson (Chico, Calif.), and junior transfer Allison Straus (Windsor, Calif.).
On the boards, three newcomers join an experienced group of Aggies led by senior school record-holder Audrey DeNeffe and classmate Lucy Lafranchise, who has qualified for the NCAA Zone E Diving Regionals three times. Freshmen Jessica Fernandez (Laguna Hills, Calif.), Shaifali Goyal (Campbell, Calif.), and Inessa Toropov (Sacramento, Calif.), bolster the UC Davis diving roster's depth.
