UC Davis at Nevada
TAKE YOUR MARK: The unbeaten UC Davis women’s swimming and diving team rolls into the “Biggest Little City” this weekend, heading east to Reno, Nev., to take on the University of Nevada on Saturday (Nov. 9) at 2 p.m. at the Lombardi Pool.
SCOUTING THE WOLF PACK: Nevada also enters the weekend unbeaten on the season after defeating Pacific (135-70) on Oct. 25 and Fresno State in its last outing (174-119) back on Nov. 2… the Wolf Pack won 15 of the 16 events against the Bulldogs last weekend and have lost only four races in their two dual meets combined this season… sophomore Yawen Li won both the 1000 freestyle and 200 breaststroke and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay squad against Fresno State, while freshman Sita Kusserow (200 free and 100 fly) and Luiza Vieira (100 and 200 back) were also double winners… senior Grace Huang was named the Mountain West Conference Diver of the Week, setting a league-best score of 321.97 to win the 1-meter against Fresno State and exhibitioned a 322.65 in the 3-meter.
SERIES WITH NEVADA: UC Davis enters this weekend’s dual with a three-meet winning streak against the host Wolf Pack, posting a 178-117 win last season at home on Nov. 16 after earning a pair of victories in 2010-11… the Aggies last win in Reno came as part of that streak, a narrow 123-120 victory on Jan. 15, 2011… Nevada’s last win in the series came back on Oct. 16, 2009, with a 161-139 win in Davis – the last in a four-meet winning streak that dated back to the 2006-07 season… the Aggies have lost three of their last four trips to Reno dating back to 2004-05.
THE WEEK THAT WAS: A trip to San Diego proved fruitful for the Aggies last weekend as they swept a double dual over the host Toreros (173.50-123.50) and Oregon State (176-120)… Hilary Hunt and Liliana Alvarez doubled up on the individual wins for the second-consecutive week, while freshman Hilvy Cheung added a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 fly.
"BACK" IN THE HUNT…:
Or is it Hunt in the back? Junior Hilary Hunt
posted a season-best in the 100 back last weekend in San Diego en route to the win, touching in a time of 57.43 to post the first sub-one minute time in the event by a UC Davis swimmer this season. Hunt later added her second win with a time of 2:04.58 in the 200 back to give her the top three time by an Aggie in that race this season.
ALVAREZ AT IT AGAIN: UC Davis senior Liliana Alvarez lowered her season-best time in the 200 breaststroke with a win last weekend in San Diego, touching in a time of 2:19.56 to win the event of the second-straight week. Her time in San Diego bested her previous low by .15 of a season and, later, followed with a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.76 – almost two seconds better than the second-place finisher from Oregon State.
THE (LA)FRANCHISE: Sophomore diver Lucy Lafranchise earned her first win of the year in the first of two 1-meter compeitions in San Diego (USD does not have a 3-meter board), posting a career-high 271.27 (the second-highest 1-meter total in school history) and giving the Aggies their first points of the day. She later finished third in the second, 1-meter competition with a score of 246.45, behind teammate Hanna Tears’ winning score of 266.10.
PORTER PERFORMS: Senior Haley Porter also had a quick day in the pool yet again, posting her first victory of the season with a time of 24.72 in the 50 free just one week after finishing second against San Jose State in both the 50 (24.19) and 100 (51.88) in the UC Davis victory – the fastest times by an Aggie in those events this season.
