Women's Swimming Signs Seven to NLIs

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's swimming team has signed seven standout recruits to National Letters of Intent, it was announced Wednesday. Head coach Barbara Jahn will welcome Liliana Alvarez (San Anselmo, Calif./Sir Francis Drake HS), Sabrina Cochrane (Novato, Calif./San Marin HS), Hilary Hunt (Los Gatos, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS), Megan Leung (San Francisco, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep), Joann Liang (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate HS), Madeline Talt (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy), and Karley Troup (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) for the 2010-11 season.

Most recently, Alvarez advanced to the CIF Finals where she placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke and qualified for the 200 individual medley. An All-American in the 100 breast and 200 medley relay events in 2009, Alvarez was a back-to-back champion in the 100 breast at the North Coast Section Championships in 2007 and 2008.

Cochrane is a four-year letterwinner in swimming and has also earned three varsity letters in water polo at San Marin High School. In 2009, Cochrane finished eighth in the 50 freestyle and tenth in the 200 individual medley at the North Coast Section Championships. She received All-American honors and was named the team's Most Valuable Player. In addition to her success in the pool, Cochrane has experienced tremendous success in the classroom and holds a 3.95 grade point average.

Hunt has earned All-American accolades the past two seasons as part of Archbishop Mitty's 200 free relay squad. She helped lead her team to a first-place finish at the Central Coast Section Championships in 2009 after the team finished as runner-up in 2008.

Leung is a three-time All-American in the 100 butterfly while at Saint Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, Calif. She helped lead her team to a seventh-place finish at the Central Coast Section Championships in 2009 after finishing fourth in 2007 and 2008. Leung is also a four-year member of the California Scholarship Federation.

 

 

Liang helped lead Northgate HS to a first-place finish in the Diablo Valley Athletic League with a record of 7-0. Individually, Liang was a North Coast Section finalist in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle in 2007 and was named an All-League North Coast Section finalist in 2008 and 2009.

Talt was named to the All-San Gabriel Valley Area first team by the Pasadena Star News in 2008 after helping Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy place fourth at the CIF Championships and earn a share of the Mission League Conference title.

Troup was a North Coast Section finalist in the 100 fly and 500 free in 2008 and repeated as a finalist in both events in 2009. In 2008 and 2009, Troup was a finalist in six events at the North American Challenge Cup and was a finalist at the 2008 Western Zone Swimming Championships. The UC Davis women's swimming team will next compete at the Toshiba Classic starting Thursday, Nov. 19 in Long Beach, Calif.
