SEATTLE, Wash. - Melanise Chapman broke her own school record in the 200-meter dash and Sarah Sumpter followed with another Aggie record while winning the 5,000, as the UC Davis women's indoor track and field team opened its season in strong fashion on Friday at the UW Invitational.

Chapman led a 1-2 Aggie finish in her heat of the 200, crossing in 24.80 and breaking her previous best of 24.93 set last year on the same track at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle. Chapman was sixth overall.

Sumpter took to the track a little later, going wire-to-wire for her win in the top section of the 5K. Her time of 16:28.21 smashed the school record of 16:51.27, set in 2009 by Kaitlin Gregg. Sumpter's mark was also just off her outdoor personal-best of 16:26.74, achieved last spring.

The Aggie duo helped highlight an impressive opening night for UC Davis. Cekarri Nixon, who was second in her heat to Chapman, was clocked in 25.07, debuting her at No. 2 on the program's all-time indoor list. Ashley Marshall was third in 25.21, making her No. 3. Leslie Reed, No. 5 on the list, equaled her career best of 25.50, done twice already.

"The Friday races gave us an opportunity to establish a tone for the meet and the bulk of the indoor season," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "We saw strong races across the board in the 200, and results indicate we're ahead of where we were opening up last year.

"Melanise lowered her indoor school record again and led a rearrangement at the top of that all-time list," he added. "Sarah Sumpter finished off the opening events with a time near her outdoor personal best in a race that saw her lead from wire to wire. "

The meet was the first of two indoor meets at Washington for UC Davis this season. The Aggies will continue action at the UW Invitational on Saturday.

"I'm excited to see similar performances tomorrow as people double back while others step into their first action of the indoor season," Wartenburg said.

The Aggies have a team of 14 athletes competing at the meet which features some of the top collegiate and professionals in the country.
