SEATTLE, Wash. - Melanise Chapman broke her own school record in the 200-meter dash on Friday, sparking the UC Davis women's indoor track and field team's first day at the Husky Classic, hosted by the University of Washington.
UC Davis also placed first in the distance medley, crossing in 11 minutes, 33.97 seconds. The rest of the Aggies' competition will take place on Saturday.
Chapman, a junior from Lancaster, was in the fastest heat of the event on Friday afternoon and finished third with a time of 24.93 seconds, well under her previous best of 25.28 set in 2010. She was one of five Aggies entered in the meet's first event.
Noelle Montcalm, also racing in Chapman's heat, won in 24.34 while Cindy Robinson of Washington State was second in 24.74. Chapman placed fifth overall in the field of 31 competitors.
The distance medley relay team of Katie Fry, Tonie Williams, Lauren Wallace and Alycia Cridebringrolled to an nearly 18-second win in their race, finishing well ahead of Cal State Los Angeles which was second in 11:51.15. Concordia (Ore.,) was third in 12:14.56.
In the 200, Williams also had a career-best time for UC Davis on Friday, placing 15th overall and second in her heat in 25.54, pushing her to fifth on the Aggies' all-time leaders' list.
