DAVIS, Calif. - Lauren Wallace won the 800-meter run while breaking her own school record, Melanise Chapmanset a school record during the 60-meter dash prelims and then lowered it in the final, and the UC Davis women's indoor track and team enjoyed impressive performances throughout the Husky Classic on Saturday at the University of Washington.
In all, UC Davis finished with 10 marks that impacted the program's all-time top-five lists, including two by Chapman in the 60 who went 7.67 seconds in the prelims. That broke the two-week old record of 7.74 set by Ashley Marshall
at the UW Invitational. Chapman then lowered it again in the finals, placing sixth in 7.62 seconds.
It was Chapman's second school record of the weekend after going 24.93 in Friday's 200 event to break her own mark in that race.
Wallace roared to a school record in the 800 on Jan 28 at the UW Invitational - breaking a mark that had stood for 16 years - before dropping the standard again on Saturday. She crossed in 2:07.48. edging Megan Malasarte of Georgia (2:07.76) to win her heat while also posting the fastest time in the 60-competitor field.
Those marks helped highlight another outstanding day for the Aggies who excelled both in the track and field events. Freshman Katie Fry
finished 14th in the mile in 4:49.35, debuting on UC Davis' all-time list in that event as just the third Aggie to break five minutes. Senior Kristina Taylor
crossed in 5:08.43, moving into fifth on the list.
also jumped to a No. 2 position; hers coming in the 3,000 when she finished 26th in the invitational race in 9:26.97. The only person in front of her on the Aggies' chart is current assistant coach Kim Conley
who, ironically, won Saturday's race in 8:57.62 while running for SRA Elite.
Marshall maintained the strong start to her Aggie career, matching her then-school record of 7.74 in the 60 from two weeks ago, She finished in 14th-place in Saturday's prelims while Janay Pierce
was timed in 7.85 seconds, putting her fifth all-time.
Senior Ashley Hearn
and freshman Katie Barber
provided the other two top-five marks during Saturday's meet. Hearn finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 14.56 meters (47 feet, 9.25 inches), solidifying her No. 3 position on that Aggie ledger, while Fry moved into a fifth-place tie in the high jump, going 1.62 meters (5-03.75).
"We couldn't be more pleased with the way in which the athletes rose to the occasion throughout the course of the meet's second day," said Aggie coach Drew Wartenburg
. "It seemed as though every time coaches turned around we saw an Aggie establish a PR mark, and the women rewrote the all-time lists in the process of competing well in every event."
The Aggies will decide if they will return to the UW Final Qualifier Meet on Mar. 3 but will also continue preparations for their outdoor season which also begins in March.
