SEATTLE, Wash. - Kim Conley bettered her school record in the 3,000-meter run, Jonathan Peterson lowered his school-best mark in the same event on the men's side, and Kaitlin Gregg established a new Aggie mark in the women's 5,000 as UC Davis performed well on Saturday at the Husky Indoor Track and Field Invitational at the University of Washington.
UC Davis was competing at Dempsey Indoor for the second time in the past two weeks, facing some of the top competition from throughout the country. More than 1,000 athletes representing over 50 collegiate programs were at the meet which produced a high number of automatic and provisional marks for the NCAA Division I Championships.
One of those provisional marks went to Conley who finished sixth in the top section of Saturday's 3,000. Conley finished in 9 minutes, 19.56 seconds, bettering the "B" standard by nearly 15 seconds and breaking her own school record of 9:30.77 by 11 seconds. Peterson, who established the 3K mark for the Aggie men when he went 8:16.99 at the UW Invitational on Jan. 31, was eighth in his section on Saturday in 8:13.90. The 3,000 was one of the most competitive events on Saturday with 18 automatic or provisional marks earned, most of them in the top section.
Gregg added the final school record by crossing the line of the 5,000 in 16:51.27, breaking the previous school-best of 16:59.44 by Conley in 2007. Gregg nearly reached the NCAA provisional mark with her outstanding effort, missing by just over six seconds.
The distance runners picked up another strong mark when Jenna Gailey finished third in her section of the mile, clocking a time of 4:59.33 which places her second all-time at UC Davis and makes her just the second Aggie to break five minutes. Lorin Scott improved her No. 3 position in the 3K, finishing in 9:43.78 on Saturday.
For the men, Russ Pfaff debuted at No. 2 on the 3,000 list for UC Davis by finishing in 8:22.18, ranking just behind Peterson.
Chelsea Azevedo also impacted the career list, moving into a tie for the third spot on the 60-meter hurdles by going 8.95, just lower than her previous best of 8.99. She tied her sister, Emily, who posted her mark in 2005. Stephanie Eckels was second in her triple jump flight, moving to No. 5 all-time at 37 feet, 9.25 inches.
The Aggie men had one other top-five performance, that coming from Thomas Phillips who was second in his section of the 400 in 49.01, putting him fifth all-time at UC Davis.
Other heat, section or flight winners at the Husky Invitational for the Aggie women at the Husky Invitational included Ugo Eke (57.32) and Kiara Reed (58.21) in the 400. Igor Seriba won his flight of the men's triple jump at 47-02.50.
Polly Gnepa qualified for the final in the 60-meter hurdles for the UC Davis men, earning seventh in the high-powered event in 8.08 after winning his prelim race with the same time.
UC Davis will make preparations for the outdoor portion of its track season which begins with a quadrangular meet at California on Mar. 7.
