Rienecker Opens Heptathlon with Strong Effort

CHICO, Calif. - Kira Rienecker won the 200-meter dash, capping a solid first day in the heptathlon at the Chico State Multi-Event Classic on Thursday, as she led three UC Davis competitors at the season-opening track and field meet.

Rienecker has 2,718 points after the first four events of the heptathlon's top section and is just 156 behind leader Jacky Stoll of Fresno City College. Aggie teammate Murphy Nicholson is in 10th place with 2,334 points. Hawk Hammer, competing in the B section of the decathlon, has 2,767 points after five events and is in sixth place.

Rienecker opened opened her day by finishing second in the 100 hurdles with a wind-aided time of 14.76 seconds and scoring 874 points. She added 577 points in the high jump (4 feet, 9.5 inches) and 434 in the shot put (28-0) before capturing the 200 by more than a half-second.

Nicholson was seventh in the hurdles and seventh in the shot put to help highlight her first-day efforts.

Hammer had a pair of top-five performances to spark his showing in the decathlon. He was was third in the long jump with a wind-aided mark of 20-1.5 and was fifth in the day-ending 400 in 55.88 seconds. Those two events netted him 1,265 points.

David Hernandez of Santa Rosa Junior College scored 3,176 points to secure the decathlon's lead at the midway point.

The meet finishes on Friday.
