CHICO, Calif. - Kira Rienecker scored 4,205 in the heptathlon, narrowly missing a personal-best, while Shane Ryan tallied 5,713 points in the decathlon, as both UC Davis competitors finished fifth in their respective events Friday at the Chico Multi Event Classic, hosted by Chico State.

Rienecker and Ryan were among six Aggies who participated in the two-day competition. Tori Edwards finished one place back of Rienecker after scoring 3,862 points, a mark that left her just 16 points shy of breaking into UC Davis' top 10. Murphy Nicholson scored 3,539 points and placed ninth while Kelsey Drain finished 10th after scoring 3,460.

Steven Pust made his Aggie debut, earning ninth place in the decathlon with 5,593 points.

"The multi-eventers opened the 2013 outdoor season with two days of strong competition," said Aggie coach Drew Wartenburg. "All but two of the athletes at Chico were making their debuts, and fifth-place finishes from Kira and Shane serve as good early signs of what we can expect from this group.

"Having a group that works as hard across a variety of event disciplines to kickstart competition is a great way to get our season underway, and the next two weekends will provide ample opportunity for the bulk of our roster to join the fray."

Rienecker entered the meet with a PR of 4,240 points, which ranks her fourth on the Aggies' all-time list, but challenged that mark with several strong finishes. She had a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash (25.77) that netted her 817 points on Thursday, and then a first-place showing in the 800 (2:20.13) that scored her 822 more on Friday.

Edwards made a run at the top 10 after helping highlight her meet with 709 points in the 100 hurdles. She also finished strong in the 800, scoring 612 points (2:36.63). Nicholson's highest score came in the 800 (2:28.93) where she scored 706, while Drain tallied 646 after crossing in 2:33.84.

Ali Worthen of Seattle Pacific won the competition with 5,243 points.

Ryan posted a first-day total of 3,198 points in the decathlon after a first-place effort in the high jump (1.95m, 6 feet, 4.75 inches) tallied him 758 points. He earlier scored 681 in the 100 (11.85) and then capped the 10-event competition with 716 points in the 1,500 (4:34.39).
