STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Veronica Smart was a double-winner in the field events for UC Davis, while Ethan Ostrom and Ben Parodi each won field events for the men, as the Aggie track and field teams kicked off the outdoor season on Saturday at the Stanford Opener.

Additionally, the women picked up a pair of wins in distance events as Katie Fry captured the 1,500-meter race and Raquel Lambdin won the 3,000. Smart added her two victories in the shot put and hammer throw while Ostrom took first in the pole vault and Parodi was victorious in the shot put.

The competition was the first of the season for UC Davis who will host the Aggie Open next weekend. Besides the Aggies, Cal, San Francisco, Fresno State and a variety of club and unattached athletes took part in the meet.

"The Stanford Opener brought ideal conditions and solid competitive fields for us to test the early season waters," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "Six individual event wins, numerous PR's, and marks that put people ahead of where they left off last spring indicate good things await."

Smart started strong in the throws, winning the hammer throw with a mark of 155 feet, 3 inches and then posting a PR by just over a foot in the shot put with her first-place effort of 45-0.25. It also moved her up three spots to No. 5 on the Aggies' all-time list.

Fry jumped two spots on the program's 1,500 charts after her victory in the 1,500, crossing in 4:27.53, a PR for her by just over two seconds. She was in a duel with Sydney Gray (4:27.94), edging her at the tape. Lamdbin had a strong race in the 3,000, timed in 9:40.12 and winning by 15 seconds over Heather Cerney of Cal.

On the men's side, Ostrom, who shares the school record in the pole vault, was an easy winner on Saturday with his mark of 16-02.75. Cal's Andrew Ramay was second, nearly two feet back at 14-03.25.

Parodi, who was also second in the hammer throw, posted a mark of 50-04.00 in the shot put for UC Davis' second victory for the men's team.

The Aggies had solid performances throughout their lineup. Newcomer Matt Bender was second in the discus (163-00) and third in the hammer throw (159-10). Sprinter Corey Hobbs also was solid in his first action, taking third in both the 100 (10.86) and the 200 (21.83).

Wartenburg was pleased with his teams' efforts on Saturday.

"Veronica (Smart), Katie (Fry) and Rocki (Lambdin) not only competed for wins but also shifted the all-time performance lists in the process," he said. "Matt Bender had an outstanding debut in an Aggie singlet and Corey Hobbs provided a spark for the men's sprinters.

"The Aggie Open will provide a chance to put more athletes in a position to showcase early fitness, and we'll also open out relays squads next weekend as well," he added.

The Aggie Open annually attracts top collegiate and open competitors and will be conducted on Woody Wilson Track. Events will take place throughout the day.

Ashley Marshall, who holds the indoor school record in the 60-meter dash at 7.35 seconds, competed at the University of Notre Dame on Saturday, hoping to post a time that would put her in position to earn a berth to the NCAA Indoor Championships. She just missed her school mark but still posted an outstanding time of 7.44 in the prelims. Marshall was third in the finals (7.50).
