IRVINE, Calif. - UC Davis won four events on both the men's and women's sides as the Aggie teams began the outdoor portion of their track and field seasons with good performances on Saturday at the All-Cal Challenge Cup at UC Irvine.
The meet, which was comprised of only University of California schools, was won by UC Irvine on the men's side and UC Santa Barbara on the women's. The Anteaters scored 269.5 points in the men's competition with the Aggies taking fourth with 156. The Gauchos had 253 for the women's title with UC Davis taking fourth with 154.
UC Davis had four winners on the men's side. Justin Hurd captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 9.08 seconds, leading a pair of Aggies in the top five. Jeff Wilson took fifth in 9:27.86.
UC Davis' other wins came in the field events with Mike Comorato leading the way in the pole vault. Comorato went 16 feet, 6 inches, placing him fifth on the Aggies' all-time performers' list. John Cunnie moved into eighth in the hammer throw, winning with a toss of 189-7, while Ryan Frank was victorious in the discus throw at 168-7. Robert Rubio took second to Cunnie in the hammer, finishing at 183-0, while Cunnie was third in the discus at 166-2. Frank was also third in the shot put, rounding out a good day for UC Davis in the field events.
Other Aggies with high finishes included Steve Laurie, who was second in the 5,000 in 14:36.87, Kyle Dunst, who placed second in the 800, Ryder Heidleberger, who was fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 200, and Roland Chu who was fourth in the 100.
The Aggie women also captured four wins. Mary Jo Alexander went 1:03.76 to finish first in the 400 hurdles while Kim Gleeson was first in the discus throw after an effort of of 164-0. Stephanie Marks tied for first in the high jump with Devon Tracy of UC Santa Barbara as both leaped 5-8. For Marks, it was a career-best effort and vaulted her to second on the Aggies' all-time list.
UC Davis' other win came from its 4x400 relay, which won with a time of 3:53.53. Gleeson also finished well in the shot put, earning third with a mark of 44-2.75 which places her second all-time at UC Davis.
The Aggies had nine other top-five finishes on Saturday, including a third from Danielle Green in the 100, whose mark of 12.37 puts her eighth all-time for the Aggies. Laura Cherdack was third in the 5,000, Emily Azevedo was third in the 100 hurdles and Marlene Avita placed third in the 800.
UC Davis will host the Aggie Track and Field Classic next Saturday at Woody Wilson Track.
