BERKELEY, Calif.- The UC Davis women's track and field team won five events on Saturday, including the clinching 4x400 relay, to win the Cal Opener quadrangular meet by two points, while the Aggie men captured seven while taking second.

UC Davis scored seven points with its relay win, finishing with 116 points and beating host Cal (114) by two points. San Francisco took third with 60 points while Stanford (32) was fourth. The Bears scored 157.5 points to capture first place on the men's side with the Aggies taking second with 132. USF (32) and Stanford (23.5) finished in the final two spots.

Marcus Johnson (100, 200) was a double-winner for the men while Karl Moran (110HH), Alex Grigoriev (800), Brandon Greenberg (shot put), Trevor Halsted (3,000) and the 4x400 relay also finished first. Raquel Lambdin (3,000), Cekarri Nixon (400), Catherine Li (triple jump), Kira Rienecker(100H) and the 4x400 relay were victorious for the women.

"Today's season opener delivered a full range of marks that provide some proof that both teams have prepared well to perform," said Aggie coach Drew Wartenburg. "In a format that shaped up almost like a dual meet, athletes competed flat out in every event today. It can be easy to look past, or write off, opportunities for competition early in the season as rust-busters, but today we saw numerous athletes produce marks that represent personal bests as well as ones that will stand up for West Region qualification later this spring.

"We really did see a true team effort today, from early hammer throws to an exciting battle in the 4x400 to end the meet," he added. "This is the best opening meet I have seen in my time at UC Davis, and we look forward to getting right back at it next weekend at home."

The women's competition essentially turned into a dual meet between UC Davis and Cal who exchanged wins throughout the day. They were tied with 109 points through 18 events and heading into the meet-ending 4x400 relay which the Aggies won with a time of 3:46.14.

Earlier, Lambdin captured her first win of the season with her victory in the 3,000. Her time of 9:35.32 was a PR and moved her up one spot on the Aggies' top-10 list to No. 5. The Aggies had consecutive wins on the track earlier in the meet when Rienecker (14.93) took the short hurdles followed by Nixon, school-record holder in the 400, who won that event in 55.85. Li went 37-10.75 to take the triple jump.

Freshman pole vaulter Holly Tokar, whose 12-6 mark indoors this winter put her No. 2 all-time, has already placed her name on the outdoor ledger with her second-place jump of 12-6. Victoria Rische of Cal also went 12-6 but finished first due to fewer misses.

Veronica Smart was second in the hammer throw at 165-05, giving her a PR by two inches and improving her No. 8 all-time position. Katie Barbertied her personal-best and No. 7 all-time height in the high jump, placing second on Saturday at 5-7.

Johnson, who returned to UC Davis after two years at Santa Monica City College, had a strong 2014 debut with his two wins for the men, both which put him in the Aggies' all-time top 10. He opened his day by taking the 100 in 10.68 seconds, putting him ninth all-time, and then crossed the finish line of the 200 in 21.53, vaulting him to No. 4.

Johnson also ran the second leg of the second-place 4x100 relay. That quartet - comprised of Sava Boyadjiev, Johnson, Kaio Sena and Shamawn Wright- tied for the second-fastest relay in school history with its time of 41.16.

Moran is adding the 110 high hurdles to his plate this season and he started well with his win in 14.52 seconds. It also quickly made him No. 6 on the program's career leaders list. He also ran the second leg on the Aggies' winning 4x400 relay (3:14.97).

Freshman Alex Grigoriev made his UC Davis debut a successful one, putting together an impressive race in the 800 which he won in 1:50.33. That time already puts him No. 4 all-time. Trevor Halsted capped the Aggies' wins on the track, taking the 3,000 in 8:19.39. Brandon Pughwas second in 8:24.76 as both moved into the top 10 at No. 4 and No. 8, respectively.

Brandon Greenberghighlighted the field events for UC Davis with his first-place finish in the shot put. His PR of 56-5.75 gave him a PR by two inches and improved his No. 6all-time position.

UC Davis will return to competition next weekend when it hosts the Aggie Open at Woody Wilson Track.
