SACRAMENTO, Calif.- Sparked by school records in the women's 200-meter dash and 4x100 relay, a first-place in the 1,500, and a pair of wins from the men, the UC Davis track and field teams entered their bye week in strong fashion after competing well at Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational on Saturday.

The meet, held in ideal conditions, was UC Davis' last before they enter final exams starting Tuesday. The Aggies will return to competition in two weeks.

Sophomore Ashley Marshall broke teammate Melanise Chapman's Aggie record in the 200, finishing second on Saturday in 24.02 seconds while making her first appearance on the program's all-time list. Chapman, who entered the meet with the record at 24.09, actually broke her own record first after finishing her heat in 24.04. Marshall then lowered it in the following heat. Chapman finished third overall.

Both Aggie standouts had a part in the other school record as well, forming half of UC Davis' second-place 4x100 relay which was timed in 45.26. Leslie Reed and Cekarri Nixon were also on the record effort. That was well under the previous record of 45.77 set by Stephanie Eckels, Nicole Theus, Laura Rombach and Ugo Eke in 2007.

The Aggie men were paced by a pair of first-place performances on Saturday. Cody Nguyen was victorious in the 800, crossing in 1:55.21, while the 4x400 relay of Corey Hobbs, Karl Moran, Caine Harder and Shane Ryan won its event in 3:17.11.

"Favorable conditions and some good competition helped us produce a series of good results," said Aggie coach Drew Wartenburg. "Even as the emphasis on quality training remains high, we are also looking for people to compete hard at this early stage.

"The necessity for us to bring good performances daily while training in a challenging practice environment has translated well to meet day," he added. "The athletes' efforts are continuing to yield some PR results that will also stand up regionally over the course of the season."

Many of those PR's came from the Aggie women who also picked up two more impressive showings in the 200 from Reed and Nixon. Reed was 12th in 24.72, moving up two spots to No. 5 on the UC Davis career leaders list while Nixon jumped one position to No. 7 after finishing 13th in 24.77.

Raquel Lambdinprovided another in the 1,500, winning in 4:24.07. It was a 9-second PR for Lambdin while debuting her on the Aggies' all-time ledger at No. 6. As of early Saturday evening, it was also the third-best mark this season among NCAA Div. I runners.

The field events saw several marks alter the top-10 charts as well. Two of them came in the hammer throw where Sarah Hussey had a PR by more than six feet when she finished fourth at 172 feet, 6 inches, moving her all the way from No. 7 to No. 4. Sophomore Veronica Smartedged onto the all-time chart by one inch, taking the No. 10 position after placing fifth on Saturday at 157-04.

Freshman Praise Adesida, coming off a strong showing at last week's Aggie Open, had a PR in the shot put, earning third at the Hornet Invitational with a mark of 46-5.25. That was a career-best by more than a foot and moved her five spots to No. 3 all-time.

Freshman pole vaulter Danielle Steffen tied her early season PR on Saturday, finishing third alongside teammate and school-record holder Emily Bushat 11-5.75. For Steffen, she remains seventh on the Aggies' career list.

Nguyen helped pace the UC Davis men with his victory in the 800, edging club runner William Chen who was second in 1:55.79, just behind Nguyen's winning time of 1:55.21. Nguyen bested a field of 35 runners in the event.

Hobbs, Moran, Harder and Chandler later capped the meet with their close victory in the 4x400. They crossed in a season-best 3:17.11, beating out American River College (3:17.41) and City College of San Francisco (3:17.98) who were right behind. Sacramento State (3:18.12) and Chico State (3:18.88) were also part of the exciting finish.

The Aggie men had nine other top-five performances at the meet, spread among both the running and field events.

Ben Parodi was second in the shot put (52-10.75) while third-places came from Michael Peterson in the pole vault (15-5), Matthew Bender in the discus (163-3), Moran in the 400 (49.20), and the 4x100 relay of Hobbs, Chandler, Harder and Sava Boyadjiev).

Fourth-place finishes were captured by Hobbs in the 400 (49.21), Boyadjiev in the long jump (22-5) and Maurice Spikes in the high jump (6-8). Basil Okoroiketook fifth in the triple jump (47-00.25), rounding out the top finishes for UC Davis.

UC Davis will take a break for final exams and will not compete until the weekend of Mar. 29-30. The Aggies will travel to the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Mar. 29 while also competing at the Stanford Invitational on Mar. 29-30.
