SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Samantha Kearney won the steeplechase to help spark the UC Davis women on Saturday while Jonathan Peterson, Sava Boyadjiev and Ethan Ostromhad wins for the men, highlighting the Aggies' day at Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational.

In all, the UC Davis women had 14 top-five finishes while the men posted a dozen.

Kearney won the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 21.66 seconds, finishing with a 3-second win over Jessie Rozario of Southern Oregon who crossed in 11:24.77.

The Aggies' distance crew also picked up an outstanding performance from Alycia Cridebringwho had a career-best effort with her second-place showing in the 5,000. Peterson is already No. 3 on the Aggies' all-time 1,500 ledger and won his first outing in the event of the spring in 3:50.82 while edging former teammate Jonathan Sees(3:52.76) who runs for Sra Elite. Boyadjiev added another UC Davis win, taking the 100 in a wind-aided 10.88 seconds.

"Bringing athletes back after a long meet last weekend, with practice workloads still heavy, the Hornet Invitational was an opportunity to push through cumulative fatigue and still produce results," said Aggie coach Drew Wartenburg. "Good showings and event wins by veterans like Ethan Ostromand Jonathon Peterson helped establish positive, early season tone.

"Melanise Chapman and Sava Boyadjiev, who continues to emerge as a versatile presence in this program, served as excellent catalysts on the track in the short sprints, while Ashley Hearn and Brandon Greenbergshowed good consistency to help pace the throws cadre again this weekend," he added.

Hearn helped note her day with an impressive effort in the hammer throw, finishing fifth with a mark of 53.44 meters (175-04), just three inches shy of her career-best mark earned last week at the Aggie Open. She sits third all-time at UC Davis.

Greenberg was second in the shot put at 16.12 meters (52-10.75), adding three-quarters of an inch to his personal-best and improving his No. 10 spot on the Aggies' career leaders list.

Other top-five showings for the women included seconds by Katie Fry (1,500) and the 4x100 relay team of Kellie Grigg, Carter, Alana Babers and Tonie Williams, and a third from Chapman in the 100. Williams (400), Kayla Carter (100 hurdles), Katie Barber (high jump) and the 4x100 (Leslie Reed, Melanise Chapman, Janay Pierce, Cekarri Nixon) earned fourths.

Hearn (hammer), Chapman (200), Shannon Harcus (1,500), Kristine Lozoya (5,000) and Emily Bush(pole vault) each had fifth-place performances.

The Aggie men posted five runner-up placings from Karl Moran (400 hurdles), Greenberg (shot put), Igor Seriba (triple jump) and both relays while Trevor Halsted was third in the 5,000. Robert Neely (long jump) and Ben Parodi (shot put) captured fourth-place finishes and Kaio Sena(200) added a fifth.

Boyadjiev, Hosea Tate, Sena and Corey Hobbs comprised the 4x100 while Everardo Villalobos, Jason Chandler, Lawrence Doherty and Moran made up the 4x400.

"The two weeks before our next meet will represent a time when athletes need to take care of final exams and then begin raising the level in practice in preparation for the month of April and the excellent competitive opportunities that await," said Wartenburg. "We have a short time to catch our breath, take a look at what is going on elsewhere in our conference and in the region, and then go back out and execute to the best of our ability."

UC Davis returns to action on Mar. 31 at the Fresno State Invitational.
