SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Mike Comorato won the pole vault at the Hornet Track and Field Invitational at Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon, Ryan Frank improved his No. 6 position on UC Davis' career leader list in the shot put and the women's 4x100 relay posted a season-best time of 46.95 seconds to win its race, highlighting the Aggies' first action since breaking for final exams.
Justin Hurd, meanwhile, led the Aggies' distance contingent at the Stanford Invitational, finishing 16th in the steeplechase in 8:59.34 on Saturday but moving into the No. 2 spot on the Aggies' career list. Steve Laurie moved to fourth in the 10,000 when he finished in 30:03.99 on Friday night.
UC Davis, which last competed on Mar. 13 during the Aggie Track and Field Classic, sent its distance runners to the prestigious Stanford Invitational for competition on Friday night and Saturday, while the remaining team members traveled to local rival Sacramento State for action on Saturday.
Hurd, whose previous best time in the steeplechase was 9:04.94 at last year's NCAA Division II Championships, improved upon that mark with his 8:59.34 on Saturday at Stanford. His time moved him from seventh to second on the Aggies' career list, making him just the second UC Davis runner to eclipse nine minutes in the event. Ed Haver set the school record of 8:48.54 in 1971.
Laurie was previously No. 8 on the all-time list in the 10,000 but moved to third after his performance on Friday night. His previous career-best was 30:20.51, set last season. He moved in front of John Sheehan, who went 30:04.24 in 1975.
At Sacramento State, Comorato won the pole vault with an effort of 15 feet, 11 inches, earning him the Aggie men's highest finish on the day. Frank solidified his No. 6 spot on the career leaders' list in the shot put, finishing second on Saturday at 53-3.50 and besting his previous best by 1.25 inches.
The women's 4x100 relay won its race with a season-best time of 46.95, bettering the mark of 47.61 set at the All-Cal Challenge at UC Irvine on Mar. 6.
Other top top-five finishes for the UC Davis women at the Hornet Invitational included seconds from Danielle Green in the 100-meter dash (12.28w) and Stephanie Marks in the high jump (5-4.25), a fourth from Emily Azevedo in the 100 hurdles (14.60) and fifth-place showings from Amaya Greenwood in the 100 (12.35) and Marisha Dixon in the 400 (59.25).
The Aggie men picked up third-place finishes from Ryder Heidelberger in the 400 (49.03) and Chris Ferren-Cirino in the 1,500 (3:58.92), and fourths from Michael Butler in the long jump (22-8), Matt Lesenyie in the triple jump (44-0) and Frank in the discus (163-5). John Cunnie was fifth in the discus (162-2) while the 4x100 relay had a season-best time to finish second in 41.98.
Joel Bosserman posted the fastest time by an Aggie this season in the 1,500 with his mark of 3:55.40 on Friday night at Stanford. Kyle Dunst had a season-best time in the 800 (1:53.61) while Justin Rau did the same in the 1,500 (3:56.23). Laura Cherdack had a season-best mark in the 5,000 (17:39.59) and was fifth, while Erna Forgo (4:41.99) and Melissa Best (4:58.39) also had season-best showings with their finishes in the 1,500.
Current UC Davis assistant coach Andy Bloom, who finished fourth in the shot put at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, earned a provisional qualifying mark in the discus for this year's U.S. Olympic Trials when he posted a winning mark of 193-10 on Saturday at the Hornet Invitational. He beat the standard by seven inches.
UC Davis returns to action at the Cal-Nevada State Championships at San Luis Obispo next weekend.
