SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Junior Jazmen Bunch won the women’s 200-meter dash and freshman Emem Ibekwe captured the women’s triple jump, setting school Top 10 marks in the process, to highlight UC Davis action at the Mondo Team Challenge collegiate track & field meet at Hornet Stadium Saturday.

Bunch dominated the field with a winning time of 24.12 seconds, moving into fifth in school history with that mark. Her 24.04 as a sophomore at San Diego State stands as only faster wind-legal time as a collegiate sprinter. Meanwhile, Ibekwe posted a winning 11.80 meters, or 38-feet-8.75, despite a significant headwind of 2.1 meters per second. That becomes her first wind-legal mark of her collegiate career for that event, and puts her ninth in the UC Davis record book.

Overall, the Aggies enjoyed seven event wins at the Mondo, including two relays. Bunch and Ibekwe also accounted for two of five new marks in the UC Davis outdoor all-time lists. Freshman Kierra Davis improved on her personal best in the 100 meters, finishing second in the race with a time of 11.78. She moves up one spot into fourth in the UC Davis’ all-time outdoor record book, ahead of Nicole Theus and behind teammate Natsumi McGee, who finished third in the event at 11.82.

On the men’s side, sophomore Steven Childs finished second in the men’s long jump with a best leap of 7.33 meters, or 24-0.75. He is only the third Aggie in the program’s Division I era to break the 24-feet barrier in the event, and moves into ninth all-time ahead of teammate Kyle Clancy in the school record book.

UC Davis won the women’s 4x100 relay, with the foursome of Mikaela Adolphus, Bunch, Davis and McGee beating Fresno State’s runner-up team with a time of 45.50. This also enters that crew into the school record book into a tie for fifth with the 2014 squad of Cekarri Nixon, Ashley Marshall, Leslie Reed and Kellie Grigg. This was one of two Aggie relay wins for the day, as the Brian Thomas-Antony Ardis-Ryan Hoffman-Xolan Brown team in the 4x400 relay posted a 3:18.95 to beat meet host and Causeway rival Sacramento State by more than a full second.

Among the other Aggie first-place finishes, senior Olivia Goins led a UC Davis 1-2 exacta in the 800 meters, less than a day after posting a huge steeplechase PR at San Francisco State. She crossed in 2:12.84, just three tenths of a second in front of sophomore teammate Emily Antonino’s 2:13.14. That represents another huge career improvement for Goins, whose previous fastest in the event was a 2:16.94 at the Aggie Open earlier this year.

Senior Basil Okoroike won the men’s 100-meter dash at 10.62. Although a slight wind assistance of 2.1 meters per second prevent the mark from counting as a personal record, it will still move him up in the Big West Conference standings from his previous season best of 10.99. Senior Jelani Legohn won the men’s 400 hurdles with a time of 53.89.

Meanwhile, a small contingent of UC Davis runners remained in the Bay Area to compete at the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Alex Grigoriev finished sixth (1:50.64) in the men’s 800 at Stanford, while Rianna Goins ran a 2:11.70 in the women’s 800. Nick Ratto competed in the men’s 800 (1:54.10) at S.F. State.

UC Davis returns to action at Arizona State’s Sun Angel Classic on April 7-8.
