SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Justin Rau finished second in his preliminary heat of the 1,500-meter run on Saturday in 3 minutes, 56.64 seconds, advancing to Sunday's final of the event at the California-Nevada State Track and Field Championships at Cal Poly.
Mary Jo Alexander was second in her heat of the 400 hurdles, also qualifying for Sunday's finals, to help lead the UC Davis women.
Rau qualified for the final of the middle distance event along with teammate Tony Ahr, who was fifth in the same heat. The pair, along with Alexander, represent three of seven Aggies who advanced through Saturday's prelims of running events.
Kyle Dunst advanced in the 800 for the men, while the women also qualified Erna Forgo in the 1,500 and Emily Azevedo in the 100 hurdles. Roland Chu advanced in the 200. Additionally, Ryan Frank posted a career-best distance of 53 feet, 6.5 inches in the shot put, reinforcing his No. 6 position on the Aggies' career leader list.
The UC Davis men have 8.5 points and are in seventh after five scored events, while the women have yet to tally any points after three finals. Cal State Northridge has 22 points to lead the women's competition and Cal has 39 and is in first in the men's.
UC Davis qualified more than 30 athletes for the weekend meet.
Rau was second in his heat of the 1,500 to Ryan Moorcroft of Cal Poly, who won the race in 3:55.43 while Ahr was fifth in a season-best time of 4:00.07. Dunst qualified in the 800 after taking third in his heat in 1:54.33. Roland Chu had a season-best time in the 200 for the Aggie men after placing third in his heat in 22.10.
Forgo took third in her heat of the 1,500 in 4:40.43, the best time by an Aggie this season. Azevedo advanced in the short hurdles with a wind-aided time of 14.47, finishing fourth in her heat. Alexander moved on in the long hurdles, finishing second in her heat with a time of 1:03.54. Comfort Agara of Cal State Northridge won the prelim in 59.65.
Kim Gleeson placed ninth in the shot put final at 43-8.5, just missing on scoring points for the Aggies. Robert Rubio scored three points and John Cunnie scored a pair for UC Davis in the hammer throw - contested on Friday - after finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Rubio went 188-4 while Cunnie finished at 186-11.
Frank's performance in the shot put tied him for fifth and garnered UC Davis 3.5 points.
Competition concludes on Sunday with finals in all running events and several field events.
