SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Ryan Frank finished second in the discus with a mark of 169 feet, 10 inches, while Chelsey mauck placed fifth in the high jump at 5 feet, 6.5 inches, as both UC Davis teams concluded competition on Sunday at the California-Nevada State Championships at Cal Poly.
The Aggie men scored 47.5 points and finished seventh at the meet while the women had 18 and tied for 13th. Cal State Northridge captured the men's title with 127 and San Diego State claimed the men's with 167.
Frank, who tied for fifth in the shot put on Saturday, earned eight points for UC Davis on Sunday with his runner-up showing in the discus. The mark was just a foot off his career mark of 170-10 set last season. Mike Thompson finished seventh in the discus on Sunday after going 155-1.
UC Davis had six athletes in individual running finals on Sunday, including a pair in the 1,500 where Justin Rau finished fourth in 3:53.2 and Tony Ahr placed 12th in 4:04.89. Roland Chu was sixth in the 200 in 22.23 and Kyle Dunst was sixth in the 800 in 1:54.49.
Will Mercad (15:04.30) and Jorge Murillo (15:06.88) were 10th and 12th, respectively, in the 5,000 for other UC Daviis finishes, while the 4x100 relay squad was fifth in 42.55.
Besides Frank and Thompson, the only other Aggie to place in a field event final was Mike Comorato who was fourth in the pole vault at 16-4.75.
Mauck moved into a four-way tie for fifth on the Aggies' all-time career leaders list in the high jump after going 5-6.5 on Sunday. She joins teammate Stephanie Marks (2003), Anita Engelman (1999) and Jennifer Lee (1999) who also achieved the mark.
UC Davis had seven runners in finals on Sunday, including Emily Azevedo who finished seventh in 14.29. The mark would've lowered her school record in the event but was contested with a tailwind of 3.5 meters/second, nullifying the mark for record purposes. She set the school mark at 14.33 earlier this season.
Freshman Louisa Hays led three Aggies in the 5,000, finishing seventh in 18:02.09. Kelsey Kaiser was 11th and Eva Gut placed 17th. Jenny Wilson was another Aggie in a distance final, taking ninth in the 3,000 in 10:43.59.
Erna Forgo earned a spot in the 1,500 final, also placing ninth with a time of 4:45.15. Mary Jo Alexander qualified in the 400 hurdles, placing eighth on Sunday in 1:03.63. The Aggies' final participant was Kim Gleeson, who took 10th in the discus.
UC Davis also qualified a pair of relays, finishing eighth in the 4x400 (3:55.50) and tying for 10th in the 4x100 (47.61) with Sacramento State.
The Aggies return to action at the Brutus Hamilton Classic next weekend.
