BERKELEY, Calif. - Ryan Frank finished fourth in the discus, Mike Comaroto did the same in the pole vault and Stephanie Marks finished fourth in the high jump on Saturday as UC Davis readied for next week's Woody Wilson Classic with competition at the Brutus Hamilton Memorial Invitational at Berkeley.
On Friday, Chris Ferren-Cirini was third in the steeplechase and Michelle Solone was second in the 5,000. UC Davis set a limited group to the meet at Cal as the remainder of the squad continued preparations for next weekend's large home meet.
Frank had a career-best effort in the discus, throwing 174 feet, 8 inches. That surpassed his previous best of 170-10 and moved him to No. 2 on the Aggies' all-time leader list. He went 168-7 earlier this season at the All-Cal Challenge at Irvine.
Comorato finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing 15-9; placing behind winner Adam Pierson of Illinois who went 16-8.75. Marks had another fourth-place finish for the Aggies on Saturday after clearing the high jump bar at 5-5.
UC Davis' highest finishes at the meet came on Friday during early competition as Solone knocked 20 seconds off her season-best time in the 5,000, finishing second in 17:35.84. Teammate Jessica Neu was fourth in 18:14.50 while Jenny Wilson took fifth in 18:41.81. Chris Ferren-Cirini ran the steeplechase for the first time this season for the Aggie men and finished third in 9:27.72, just ahead of teammate Tim Helms who was fifth in 9:39.45. Jeff Wilson took sixth on Friday in the 5,000 in 15:05.15, third-fastest on the team this season.
UC Davis had four other top 10 individual finishes on Saturday, two each for the men and women. For the men, Michael Butler took seventh in the long jump at 21-9 while Matt Lesenyie was ninth in the triple jump at 44-4. For the women, Melissa Ferguson and Amy Purtle had season-best times in the 400 hurdles, finishing sixth in 1:03.02 and ninth in 1:04.50, respectively.
Current UC Davis assistant coach Andy Bloom improved his provisional qualifying mark in the discus for this summer's Olympic Track and Field Trials in Sacramento, winning the event with a throw of 198-4. Saturday's Woody Wilson Classic is part of the campus's Picnic Day activities and will feature several hundred competitors.
