Heptathlon Opens Mondo Mid-Major Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Davis' Kira Rienecker finished first in the 200-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 25.85 seconds on Thursday afternoon, scoring 810 points and helping lead her into sixth place after the heptathlon's first day at Sacramento State's Mid-Major Challenge.

Rienecker, competing in her second multi-event competition this season, scored 2,504 points which beat her first-day total of 2,430 points at Chico State last month.

Freshman Murphy Nicholson has 2,035 points and is 10th-place after four events at Sacramento State, also exceeding her total of 1,999 from the opening day at Chico.

Rienecker won Thursday's final event by nearly a half-second over the Hornets' Zarria McKearney (26.31). She opened her day with a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles (15.53-wa) worth 773 points, and also had scoring of 491 points in the high jump (1.38m, 4-06.25) and 410 in the shot put (8.16m, 26-09.25).

Nicholson had a pair of eighth-place finishes on Thursday, scoring 585 points in the hurdles and 611 in the 200. She added 429 points in the high jump and 410 in the shot put.

The heptathlon concludes with the long jump, javelin and 800 on Friday. The meet, a scored competition between Idaho, Utah State, Fresno State, Portland State, Nevada, Sacramento State and UC Davis, also features unattached, open and club athletes competiting as non-scored competitors.

The men's and women's 5,000-meter runs will be contested on Friday night while a total of six field events will be held in the afternoon. The bulk of the meet will take place on Saturday.
