SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Davis' Steven Pust finished second in the 400-meter dash on Thursday afternoon, scoring 737 points to help him into sixth place and highlighting his opening day in the decathlon at the Sacramento State Mid-Major Challenge.

Pust, a freshman from Merced, scored 3,018 points through the first five events after also picking up 732 in the 100 meters, the day's first event, which he finished in a wind-aided 11.61 seconds. Kira Rienecker placed third in the 200 for the Aggie women, picking up 829 points and moving into 10th place with 2,610 after the first four events of the heptathlon.

Pust added 587 points in the long jump (6.00 meters) while also picking up 644 in the high jump (1.82m) and 318 in the shot put (7.18m). He saved his best finish for the final event of the day, however, crossing the 400-meter finish line in 51.73 seconds, barely behind winner Powhattan Williamson (51.56) of Montana State.

Chase Dalton of BYU scored 3,752 points on Thursday and leads teammate Joshua Wierich by 43 points.

Rienecker put together a solid finish to her day as well, finishing third in the 200 with a wind-aided time of 25.64 seconds. Edwards' best event came in the hurdles where she scored 739 while Nicholson (671) and Drain (679) tallied their best scores in the 200.

Both the decathlon and heptathlon finish on Friday while opening events of the balance of the meet begin as well. The track and field invitational, which brings together several schools in a scored meet, will be in full force on Saturday.
