TEMPE, Ariz. - UC Davis senior Nathan Strum won the prestigious mile race at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State on Saturday night as the Aggie men's and women's track and field teams combined for three first-place finishes at the meet. Brandon Greenberg captured the shot put while Samantha Eilertdid the same in the pole vault.
Nearer to home, Trevor Halsted won the men's 1,500 at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge at Sacramento State and Praise Adesida finished first in the women's shot put. UC Davis split its squad between the two meets this weekend as the Aggies continued to get plenty of competition in as they prepare for next month's Big West Championships at Woody Wilson Track.
Altogether, the men's and women's teams combined for eight performances that affected the Aggies' all-time charts. At Arizona State, the men's 4x100 relay of Sava Boyadjiev, Marcus Johnson, Kaio Sena and Basil Okoroike finished second in their section in 40.53 seconds, putting them No. 2 all-time at UC Davis. Johnson later came back in the premiere section of the 200, finishing sixth in 21.36 seconds which pushed him up two spots into a tie for third with Matt Devine (1987).
On the women's side, Katie Barber had a PR in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 7.75 inches to place third while vaulting her from No. 7 all-time to No. 3. Her previous best was 5-7. Eilert's win in the pole vault, which came at 12-2, was a career-best for her by four inches and broke a ninth-place tie with teammate Siobhan Anderson after both went 11-8 last weekend at Stanford.
Raquel Lambdin improved her No. 6 standing in the 1,500 in the slimmest of fashions, racing to a fourth-place time in the event's premiere section in 4:23.08. It bested her previous PR by .03. Cekarri Nixon moved up a position to No. 4 in the 200 after crossing in 24.34 in that event's premiere section. Adesida's win in the shot put at the Mondo Mid-Major gave her a PR at 49-09.25, beating her previous PR of 48-11.75 and solidifying her No. 2 spot all-time at UC Davis. Michaela Mundt added the final mark, improving her No. 9 spot in the hammer throw after earning sixth place at Sacramento State at 162-01.
Strum, who is No. 3 all-time in the 800 and No. 4 in the 1,500 at UC Davis, faced an elite field of runners in the premiere mile race. He battled Ryan Herson of Arizona State (4:02.09) and Reid Buchanan of Kansas (4:03.27) before winning the race in an impressive 4:01.39.
UC Davis had several competitors in the featured premiere sections of the Sun Angel Classic which were run during the evening. Ashley Marshall was fifth in the 100 in 11.58 and seventh in the 200 (24.05) while Nixon added the 400 premiere to her card, placing fifth in 54.81. Kellie Grigg had a strong sixth-place showing in the premiere section of the 400 hurdles (59.70).
Greenberg's first-place finish in the shot put came with a mark of 55-0.25 and gave the Aggie men two victories at Arizona State.
Halsted helped headline the Aggies' performances at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge, capturing the 1,500 in 3:49.51 which nearly put him into UC Davis' all-time top 10. He led three Aggies in the top five, a trio that also included Jordon Rushing in second (3:50.16) and Brandon Pugh in fifth (3:55.77).
