SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Alycia Cridebring's win led a dominant UC Davis showing in the 1,500-meter run, Nathan Strum led a 1-2 Aggie finish in the 800 and Ethan Ostrom captured the pole vault, as both the women's and men's track and field teams finished third at Sacramento State's Mondo Mid-Major Challenge on Saturday.

The UC Davis men also earned a win from its 4x400 relay.

The Aggie women scored 106 points, only finishing behind Utah State (148) and Fresno State (123) while the men tallied 102 points, trailing just Utah State (160.5) and the host Hornets (151).

"Third place on both the men's and women's sides should provide some validation and motivation as we look ahead," said head coach Drew Wartenburg. "In a scored meet, the bottom line is just that - points scored. It's important to take stock across all events for places where we had people in scoring roles, as well as to identify points left on the table."

Cridebring helped lead the charge on Saturday as UC Davis had four runners among the top eight finishers in the 1,500, securing 20 team points. She won the race in 4 minutes, 28.11 seconds while teammate Kristine Lozoya (3rd, 4:33.97), Shannon Harcus (6th, 4:39.97) and Courtney Crosta (8th, 4:47.89) added great depth in the event.

Strum and fellow Aggie Trevor Ehlenbach provided much the same scenario in the 800 for the men, combining for 18 points with the 1-2 finish. Strum crossed in 1:52.47 for 10 points while Ehlenbach added eight by finishing close behind in 1:53.08, edging Fresno State's John Jamieson who was third in 1:53.12.

UC Davis picked up its other win on Saturday afternoon from standout pole vaulter Ethan Ostrom who cleared 5.0 meters (16 feet, 4.75 inches) for 10 more points. Teammate Michael Petersen brought in six more points after vaulting a season-high 4.85 meters (15-11.00).

The Aggie men closed the meet by going a season-best 3:15.21 in the 4x400 relay, collecting the win from Everardo Villalobos, Jason Chandler, Hosea Tate and Karl Moran who combined to beat Fresno State (3:15.29).

Tate (21.85) and Chandler (21.89) added wind-aided fourth- and fifth-place showings in the 200, Robert Neely was fourth in the 110 high hurdles (15.02, wind-aided) and Moran was fifth in the 400 in 49.85 - best on the team this season - for other top-five finishes on the track.

In the field, Brandon Greenberg had a career-best showing for the second straight week, moving up a spot to No. 8 all-time at UC Davis in the shot put after placing second on Saturday at 16.40 meters (53-09.75). Brock Bennett was fifth in the javelin at 60.87 meters (199-08).

The Aggie women had their share of quality performances as well, particularly in the sprints where junior Melanise Chapman blazed to a second-place finish in the 100 (11.79, wind-aided) and a third in the 200 (24.51). The latter went into a -0.6 m/s headwind and was the fastest time on the team this season. Leslie Reed was fifth in the 200, crossing in a wind-aided 24.65.

That pair later combined with Janay Pierce and Cekarri Nixon for the 4x100 relay, posting a time of 46.62 seconds and giving that quartet the No. 5 all-time position at UC Davis.

Tonie Williams added another impressive Aggie performance in the 400, finishing third in 56.27, another team-best for the spring. Katie Fry was fourth in the 800 (2:11.61) while the 4x400 relay of Kellie Grigg, Alana Babers, Chapman and Nixon was third in 3:48.55, its best time this season.

Veterans Lauren Radke, Ashley Hearn and Emily Bush helped lead the field event performers. Radke went 3.85 meters (12-07.50) in the pole vault - just a half-inch off her career-best - and was second on Saturday while Bush was fifth at 3.55 meters (11-07.75). Hearn added a fourth-place showing in the hammer throw, earning a mark of 54.44 meters (178-07), her second-best performance of the season.

"Several event wins, a 1-2 finish and a number of season- and lifetime-bests give us some solid building blocks for the week to come," Wartenburg said.

The Aggies will split for a pair of meets next week, taking part at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays on Friday and Saturday and hosting a UC Davis Picnic Day tradition with the annual Woody Wilson Classic on Saturday.
