WALNUT, Calif. - Jonathan Peterson became the first Aggie to break the 14-minute mark in the 5,000-meter run while lowering his school record late Friday night, and Sarah Sumpter and Alycia Cridebring went 1-2 in their section of the 5K, helping spark the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams' stay at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays.

Additionally, sprinter Melanise Chapman challenged her school records in the 100 and 200 while Nathan Strum had a season-best performance in the 800. The meet began a busy weekend of track and field for UC Davis which will hold the annual Woody Wilson Classic on Saturday as part of Picnic Day activities on campus.

Peterson set the school record in the 5,000 at Stanford in 2010 and then lowered it to 14 minutes, 03.25 seconds later that season. Racing in the the Olympic Development Elite section at Mt. SAC on Friday night, Peterson took the mark below 14 minutes, crossing in 11th place in 13:54.25. He is 19 seconds faster than anyone else on the Aggies' all-time list.

Sumpter, who like Peterson set a school record in the 10K earlier this spring, had an impressive race in her 5,000 section late Friday night, beating her PR of 16:33.91 by about five seconds when she won the race in 16:26.74, solidifying her No. 3 all-time position at UC Davis. Cridebring helped give the Aggies a major presence in the race by placing second in 16:30.23, a 16-second career-best for her that jumped her from No. 7 to No. 4 on the program's all-time ledger.

In the sprints, Chapman was 11th in the 100 and 20th in the 200, nearing her own school records in both events. She opened her day by going 11.73 in the 100, just off her 11.67 school record, and then came back to blaze a 24.13 clocking in the 200, barely shy of her 24.09 Aggie mark. She set both school records last year.

"Melanise Chapman sparked the group with two very good races early in the day," said Aggie coach Drew Wartenburg. "She is rounding into PR-level fitness at a good time. Closing the evening with three efforts that will create movement on the national and all-time lists, including the men's school record, is exactly the type of racing we look for at meets like Mt. SAC."

Strum was fifth in his section of the 800, finishing in 1:51.37 for his fastest time this season. Ethan Ostrom (4.95 meters, 16 feet, 2.75) tied for ninth in his pole vault section, Lauren Radke cleared 3.70 meters (12-1.50) for fifth in her women's pole vault section and Kristine Lozoya debuted at No. 8 on the 10,000 ledger on Thursday night.

Nearly 1,000 competitors are scheduled to compete at the Woody Wilson Classic on Saturday. Field events begin at 9 a.m. while running events start around 11. Events will continue throughout the day. Admission is free.

"Competing at home in the Woody meet gives us a great chance to finish a weekend with one more day to produce some solid team and individual performances," said Wartenburg.
